5.0 out of 5 stars What a journey, October 3, 2007

This review is from: Brats: Our Journey Home (DVD)
It had me laughing, it had me crying, but most of all it had me understanding who I am and thinking about how and where I'm going.
If you're a Brat you must see this video.

Some of it may be a little outdated for current brats, but it is still relevant to all Brats.

Highly, highly recommended. You'll love the reflections and better understand who you are and how you got here.

5.0 out of 5 stars A revelation...., July 31, 2008

This review is from: Brats: Our Journey Home (DVD)
I was a dependent son of a 30 year man in the USAF and lived throughout the US, in Asia and in Europe. I attended 13 schools in 12 years. I thought I understood everything about the workings of a military family till I saw this DVD.

It reveals the inner workings of the military family, that paragon of support and unity. It also reveals the causes of the family disaster waiting to happen and the scars that form beneath the surface of the family members called on to sacrifice and support the one in uniform.

It explains the high incidence of post-retirement divorce and turmoil in families heretofore rock solid in their appearance. It reveals why dependent kids also have their problems adjusting to post military life.

Granted not all are catastrophic casualties, but we all bear our scars. As I approach 53 I am only now realizing the long lasting effects my 30 years serving in the military as a non-uniformed auxillary had on me.

I would not have traded it for the world, but at long last I understand the price my sisters, my mother and I, paid.

I would strongly suggest also reading " Military Brats: Legacies of Childhood Inside the Fortress"

5.0 out of 5 stars Great film, November 28, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Brats: Our Journey Home (DVD)
This is a wonderful film to see if you grew up as a military brat. Some of it is dated but it really answers some of the questions we have as adults. I knew I was different than most of the people I knew but I didn't think about how much my background made me that way. We have lots of sympathy for kids who are abused or children of alcholics but we don't give much credence to the way that moving all the time created the adults we have become. It is not a film to watch with military parents however. It is not negative nor does it denegrate parents but it because it is told from the eyes of a military brat, it isn't always complementary to parents. It does stress that our parents did the best they could but because most came from stable, single-location homes or towns; they don't always "get" where we came from. It made me cry, it made me laugh and it helped me understand a whole lot more about myself. I would recommend it not just for military kids but anyone who is seriously involved with one of use...romantically or otherwise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must see for all brats!, September 25, 2008
This review is from: Brats: Our Journey Home (DVD)
I pre-ordered this movie before it was available and was so excited to see it when it arrived at my door! When this documentary was released I was 20 years old and dealing with "adjusting" to a civilian life (although my dad had been out of the AF for about 3 years at the point).

It was wonderful to see my feelings about the military life played out in this documentary. I believe that all brats should see this! I made my husband watch this and it gave him some insight.

I agree with the previous review that all brats should read " Military Brats: Legacies of Childhood Inside the Fortress". I couldn't put that book down when I started reading it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must See for all Military Dependents, March 13, 2011
This review is from: Brats: Our Journey Home (DVD)
This movie poignantly captures the heartache and joy of being a military brat. Using actual interviews and following several different families through their recollections, the viewer may as well pack a bag as well. This movie is long overdue and earned every award it received. Bravo!

5.0 out of 5 stars This film explains so much!, August 13, 2011
This review is from: Brats: Our Journey Home (DVD)
I read 'Military Brats' when it was first published and bought a copy for my brother and one for a friend. The book and film explains so much about our lives.

My wonderful Nouasseur AB reunion group showed the film in our hospitality suite, thank you Sharon Ray Renno. There were maybe 40 people in the room and we were all laughing and crying. At certain points in the film, there was a huge gasp of recognition from the crowd. It was a high point of the reunion, we talked about the film the entire weekend.

You must see this film, if you are a Brat or love a Brat.
