Product Description

Braun's legendary travel alarm clocks were loved by many even after production stopped. Starting around April 20, 2011, the new licensed production of these clocks are available. This is the equivalent to the AB1A, originally designed by Dietrich Lubs with Dieter Rams in 1994. A pared down, very small but reliable clock, the AB1A had no snooze function, but a clear crisp crescendo alarm, and ran on one AA battery, many say, for a solid year. Silent German movement.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simplicity defined, the classic Braun alarm clock in its most basic form., September 12, 2011

I'm a fan of Braun design, and have an ever-growing collection of the brand's alarm clocks. The original AB1 was probably the simplest of these collectible clocks. Recently a handful of the classic Braun clock designs have been reissued, and this new model BNC002 is the rough equivalent of the original AB1 designed by Dietrich Lubs and released in 1987. It is approx. 2.25-inches square. The original clock evolved into the AB1A by the mid 1990s, the main difference being a smaller pop-up alarm switch. The AB1A was available again in the last decade or so, but made in China rather than Germany. This new clock is based on the Chinese-made AB1A. It uses one AA battery (a Duracell AA is included in the package).

This is the most basic of alarm clocks, it is basically on or off. No lights, no snooze function, no extras like glow-in-the-dark hands. Unlike some other Braun clocks, this model doesn't have a fold-down cover to protect the clear plastic lense over the face for travel. It uses a German-made movement--it's very quiet, and has a classic Braun crescendo alarm that starts out quiet and gets louder the longer the alarm sounds. Black is the classic Braun clock color and while the original clocks were molded plastic with an attractive matte finish, this new clock appears to be painted satin black.

The packaging is black and recalls the design language that's been used on many recent Braun shavers. Made in China, with German movement. Fans of these clocks will love this most recent release of the classic clock. Fans of design and lovers of the simple should too. Highly recommended.

I still have my old German-made travel alarm clock from 25 years ago. It is still with me like a noble, old friend. The clock offered here at Amazon, of course, is not made in Germany. It is a much dinkier version, and the ticking is clearly audible. I returned it.

5.0 out of 5 stars best travel clock, July 6, 2011

I love this clock! It is exactly what I wanted. Small, lightweight, black and easy to use. It is just a great alarm clock without any extras to weight it down or make it break down. I use it as a bed side-clock as well as a travel clock. I am so thankful that someone still makes a decent travel clock.
