Editorial Reviews

Paulina Rubio returns stronger than ever, renovated from a personal and professional standpoint. Her new album is called Brava! and is clearly a tribute to women in its prominence and potential.

Brava! has a variety of musical styles of today such as dance, pop, rock, ranchera and ballad. It's important as well to call out the collaboration of Taboo (Black Eyed Peas) in one of the tracks.

Brava! includes 10 tracks, seven songs in Spanish and three songs in English. The album was recorded in Miami and Los Angeles with collaborations from Nacho (Chino & Nacho), Red One, Julio Reyes Copello and Marcela de la Garza. In addition, the album was produced by Casadiego Alexander, Andres Recio, Reyes Copello and Red One

This is the new album by Paulina Rubio, the tenth of his solo career. A career that adds sales of 20 million albums that are certified diamond, platinum and gold. International awards, covers of major publications in the world, continental tours and the solely prolific work of Paulina in the world of fashion, cosmetics, perfumes and even the creation of her own tequila.

Since the release of Gran City Pop in 2009, Paulina Rubio has worked in productions of Gloria Trevi and more recently with Los Tigres del Norte on the MTV Unplugged special "Golpes en el Corazon," which is nominated for a Latin Grammy "Best Record of the Year".

Very surprisingly good! November 17, 2011
Format:Audio CD
I was pretty shocked to find myself enjoying this album as much as i did. Paulina's previous albums were pretty good and still are. The problem with that is that it's hard to top your previous albums. This one definitively has at the very least matched the greatness of the previous ones. I though for sure this one would have to grow on me but I liked all the songs from the beginning.

The downside is a major one for me: It only has 10 original tracks! Ugh! I'm so tired of artists doing this crap only to release a "deluxe" version a couple months later for a double dip. In a way, its better to only put 10 songs without fillers than a 14 track album with ones you skip over. Anyway, i won't rate it lower based on the amount of tracks but anyone who knows about the industry a little, may want to hold onto their money for 3-4 months for a very likely deluxe version to come.

Anyway, fantastic album with lots of colors and flavors for any pop listener.

Bravo! January 9, 2012
Format:Audio CD

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Paulina Rubio is back with "Brava!" and doing what she does best - performing unpretentious, sweet-as-candy pop.

Her first bilingual effort since 2002's "Border Girl," the album features nine songs co-written by Rubio, which gives it a more personal edge than her usual work. It is certainly a stronger effort than 2009's "Gran City Pop," which had a number of highlights but ultimately lacked the lighthearted joy its title implied.

Despite Rubio's musing about the album's themes, there is no overall message that permeates the rather schizophrenic range of subject matter. What matters is the actual quality of the songs, and they grow stronger with each listen.

Hyperactive "Me Gustas Tanto," with its hooky chorus and catchy wordplay, is one of three tracks - the others being "All Around the World" and "Heat of the Night" - produced by RedOne, famous for his work with Lady Gaga. The bouncy, frenetic, dance floor-ready nature of these songs conjures images of sweating clubgoers and shimmering disco balls. The two English tunes are interchangeable in every regard, but they are still a welcome return to English-language recording.

"Sabes Que Te Amo" switches back and forth between chilly, kinetic, synth-heavy dance/pop and elegant, piano-heavy balladry. Rubio's vocal is remarkably impassioned. It is as strong as one of Estéfano's smash hits from the early 2000s and without a doubt the best song on the album.

The relatively stark "Olvídate de Mí" and "Me Voy" are funky, elastic and extremely enjoyable, as is the sly "Cásate Con tu Mamá," a humorous skewering of a man with Oedipal Complex that glides along on slick electric guitar and Rubio's throaty laughter.

"Que Estuvieras Aquí" is a stirring tribute to Rubio's father, who died during the making of "Brava!" Unsurprisingly, Rubio sings with reverence and depth of feeling.

The only misstep is "Hoy Me Toca a Mí" featuring Taboo from the Black-Eyed Peas. It sounds a lot like a Black-Eyed Peas song - meaning it sounds a lot like music composed for a TV commercial and attempts catchiness through word repetition.

"Brava!" is a rather skimpy album, clocking in at a disappointing 35 minutes, making it a fast-moving pleasure that whets listeners' appetites for more. It is a solid effort from one of Mexico's finest entertainers.

El disco mas mediocre de Paulina Rubio. Perdida de tiempo y de dinero. Poca originalidad. No recomendado.

....just mediocre. There's nothing good about this album, not even it's enlisted heavyweights (Taboo from B.E.P, Espinoza Paz, and RedOne) can save it from being a total let down. Read more
