An Incredible Journey, July 17, 2011
This review is from: To Brave Every Danger (Paperback)
"The Incredible Journey of Mary Bryant" is a marvelous two part miniseries that was made in Australia in 2005. I bought the DVD because it stars my favorite actor, Alex O'Loughlin. It is fantastic, and I highly recommend it. You can buy it here on Amazon for a very good price.
I was so intrigued by Mary Bryant and her husband William Bryant (played by Alex O.) I wanted to read about the true story written from accurate historical records. The movie stays mostly faithful to historic fact but a few things were changed, as is usually the case with movies based on history.
I am very happy to have found this book. I got a used copy for 77 cents here on Amazon - you can't beat that - and it was in pristine condtion. You could barely tell that it had been read.
Judith Cook obviously put much work into this account of the lives of Mary and Will. It reads like a history book, but is an enjoyable read as well. Ms. Cook includes copies of public records that have survived all those years which are very interesting. Her research is impressive.
I highly recommend this book, and I would also recommend that you watch the movie first and then read the book. Usually I would do it the other way around - I usually like to read the book and then see the movie. In this case I was glad that I had seen the movie first as it inspired me to want to learn more about these incredibly brave and colorful people, as well as the fascinating beginnings of a country as wonderful as Australia. I am in the process of acquiring more books about the history of the great country of Oz and I look forward to learning more about the place I hope to visit one day.
