Book Description

November 4, 1997 3 and up
Here in one adorable package are three delightfully told stories that tackle common preschool anxieties: separation anxiety, the need for security blankets, and fear of the dark. In "Georgie Goat's Mommy Goes," Georgie learns that things that go do come back--including mommies. In "Georgie Goat's Best Friend, Coat," Georgie insists on keeping her favorite red coat with her all summer. When fall comes, the coat is now too small but her clever mom recycles it into something new. And in "Good Night, Georgie Goat," Georgie overcomes her fear of the dark when she has to reassure Grandpa Goat about the strange noises they hear in the night. Each story is written in a lighthearted, insightful, and believable way that makes this wee trilogy a perfect springboard for parent-child discussions. With bright, accessible artwork, quirky humor, and kid-pleasing sensibility, Brave Georgie Goat will strike a familiar chord with preschoolers and parents everywhere.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

"In one concise volume about preschooler Georgie, Roche successfully tackles a trio of pivotal early child-development issues: separation anxiety, loss of a transitional object and fear of the dark," said PW. Ages 1-4. (Nov.)

From School Library Journal

PreS?Three short stories about striving for independence. In "Georgie Goat's Mommy Goes," the little kid learns to handle the absence of her mother with the assurance that she will come back. In "Georgie Goat's Best Friend Coat," Georgie grows too big for her much-loved, constant companion of a coat, but finds that there are still ways to keep an old friend. "Good Night, Georgie Goat" portrays the youngster reassuring her grandfather with explanations of all the strange sounds they hear when it's dark. The patterned text will appeal to young children as much as the theme of self-reliance. Gouache artwork in colors as bold as the little goat herself accompanies the story and adds interest. Roche complements the text with pictures that extend the meaning: "'I don't think I can be brave without Coat,' said Georgie. 'I think you can,' said Mommy Goat." To the delight of listeners (and Georgie), the next page shows four items that Mother Goat has made out of the beloved garment. Simple but touching, this book won't sit on the shelf for long. Pair it with Vera B. Williams's More More More, Said the Baby (Greenwillow, 1990) for a comforting storyhour about love, families, and growing up.?Anne Knickerbocker, Cedar Brook Elementary School, Houston, TX
