5.0 out of 5 stars Great in its domain
I have had this device for several years and use it successfully:

1) During the winter in my garage(not on bare concrete), when a swinging maul would hit more than wood.

2) When the log ends are not flat enough for a maul.

3) When the the wood has not toughened with much aging.

Under these circumstances, it dances briskly around...

1.0 out of 5 stars Balsa Wood Splitter!
Yea, I was a sucker and bought it. Don't buy this unless you plan on splitting soft wood.

Would only work on the softest, driest pine. I welded a 20 lbs piece of round stock to the top of it; now it works.

Biggest waste of money I have ever made! It took me 16 hits, using a lot of strength with each, to split the edge off of an 8 inch long piece of soft maple. I could have split it with one stroke of a hatchet! I am extremely dissapointed.

I wasn't careful enough I guess, but I crushed a finger with one of these.
