I loved Heroes and I'm loving Heroes Reborn after watching the series premiere and all the Dark Matters prequels. I would give it five stars except..., I watched both the broadcast version of the two hour premiere, and the version I received from instant video, and they are not the same! Several scenes were in the broadcast that simply are missing from the version I got on instant video. I went back to the broadcast version after watching the instant video one just to be sure, and even checked with a friend in case perhaps his broadcast version was different, but nope, those scenes were broadcast but weren't included in the instant video versions. I've subscribed to numerous shows through instant video and often watch the broadcast first and instant video later, and they're always been identical scene-for-scene. I know Amazon receives these from the networks so I don't blame them, but I cannot for the life of me understand why NBC would want to provide Amazon with a cut version of the show - especially when a couple of the missing scenes included central plot elements. Perhaps it was some kind of honest editing error but I feel cheated (by NBC, ultimately) for paying good money to own a show only to have it be missing scenes that ought to have been there. I only hope it was an honest error that will be corrected, and that it won't continue to happen with future episodes.

A lot of people are writing reviews based on the web series NOT the actual program. NBC did not film the hour long episodes on an iPhone. There is no shaky webcam and cheap production levels.

I was a serious Heroes fan, and I was sorry yet relieved to see the end of it. The show never recovered from the writers' strike, but this seems to be a nice time jump to the future that Claire created when she came out as an Evo. I like the Evo name too although I will miss them being called 'specials'.

Anyway the pilot and 2nd episode are filled with some cool surprises and there's a nice deep mystery/mythology to dig my teeth into. The later seasons of Heroes were dumbed down a lot, and this doesn't seem to be--of course I've only seen 2 hours of it. (Fingers crossed) It's awesome to see Noah Bennet. He was always one of my favorite characters, and he's a great way to link the old and new.

It helps to be a Heroes fan before getting involved with this, but it isn't required. Other than Jack Coleman as Noah Bennet, the familiar faces you'll see are only guest stars (e.g., Jimmy Jean-Louis as The Haitian only gets a couple minutes of screen time). Despite the name "Reborn," this isn't a "reboot" of Heroes since it doesn't discard the previous storylines and retell Heroes from the beginning.

While consensus seems to indicate that nothing will live up to the first season of Heroes, that doesn't mean a spinoff can't be innovative. Noah Bennet (and occasionally other previous characters) are there to keep us connected with past events, but this is a story of evos (people with abilities) we haven't met yet who are trying to make their way in an evo-hostile world. The climate of Reborn somewhat resembles that of Volume IV of Heroes ("Fugitives"), the second half of Season 3 when evos were considered inherently armed and dangerous.

The new plotlines and characters are about what you'd expect but for the unprecedented new character Miko Otomo, who has one foot in our reality and the other in her own virtual reality: a video game (I'm going to look the other way and pretend this isn't ripping off Howard Overman's idea from this episode of Misfits). Miko not only throws us into some creative "in-game" scenes, she also nearly guarantees that anime fans will watch, since actress Kiki Sukezane is done up to look like an anime character whether in-game or not.

I'm not generally a fan of the superhero genre. But this series, which is essentially the same as the original one in my book, is a meticulously created presentation. It's full of the joy of doing cool stuff, telling a cool story about interesting characters. Details and touches show the crafting skill and care that went into each episode. Subtitles for example, are conveniently placed in the frame near the character speaking, rather than down at the bottom, forcing you to decide between seeing the actor or action or knowing what is being said. Such a small amount of effort required, but it adds so much. Or there's where a character throws a pad computer across the room, and the camera focuses in on the cracked glass, which melts into the shape of a truck windshield. This was totally unnecessary attention to detail thrown in just for the love of making a better product. The original Heroes had it's own story arc, and this one is different, but still character driven and surprising.

This is a nice continuation to the Heroes story. If you liked the original series, I can't imagine you not liking this one.
I wold have liked to see Milo Ventimiglio back but the character he portrayed, Peter Petrelli was way too powerful, even after they re-wrote his power palette in later seasons.
But, yeah, the story's good, the acting is tight, the dialog is mostly fluid. It's a fantasy tale so willing suspension of disbelief is definitely required, but if you like super hero stories, you'll likely enjoy this.
