5.0 out of 5 stars THE BRAVE is one of Depp's best movies.
These days when I watch a movie I find myself unable to suspend my disbelief and get into the story. What I mean is that I'm constantly aware that I'm watching a movie. 1.0 out of 5 stars Don't Support DVD Pirates
US DVD market is flooded with Korean and Taiwanese bootlegs. Both countries never signed international copyright agreement and these discs are being distributed by organizations that wildly participate not only in movie piracy but also drugs and prostitution. Use google or yahoo search engine (keyword: Korean bootleg dvd or similar) and learn the truth for yourself...

These days when I watch a movie I find myself unable to suspend my disbelief and get into the story. What I mean is that I'm constantly aware that I'm watching a movie. This was a movie where I was able to loose myself in the story. I felt like I was really watching a man taking a desperate measure to save his family. In the film, Depp's character makes a deal to sell himself to some men who want to make him the star of their Snuff film. I felt myself being able to wonder what such a situation would be like as I watched Depp playing the character and I found myself actually hoping he would find a way out of his situation. Whether he got out of it or not I will not say as to do so would ruin the movie to an extent. WIth all the garbage that Hollywood produces it's a shame that a great film like this isn't released in the states. When I bought The Brave it came with another Depp movie called the PIANO II as part of a two pack. For me pursonally, the PIANO II was one of the biggest peices of crap I've seen in awhile but I got both movies for a price that I would have gladly paid for THE BRAVE DVD by itself.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Little Films, July 7, 2006
By
This review is from: The Brave / The Piano II aka The Man Who Cried (2 DVD set - Import) (DVD)
The review stating that The Brave has a glitch in its smooth play on a DVD player was submitted well before I purchased this set myself. I took a chance, and for that I was rewarded with a perfectly functional two-disc set. Both films play perfectly on the DVD player. Perhaps it was simply a bad print on the previous reviewer's disc.

Both films are excellent, the acting shines, and if you are a fan of either Johnny Depp or of the Indie film genre (or both) then this set is definitely for you. Do not expect great action sequences or explosions, this is not Pirates. This is film brought down to its most basic layers: good script and superb acting.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Brave - A compelling depiction of devoir and sacrifice, April 3, 2007
This review is from: The Brave / The Piano II aka The Man Who Cried (2 DVD set - Import) (DVD)
This is a positively overwhelming depiction of bravery and tenderness. The quiet fear Johnny Depp expresses in the first trip to the warehouse is perfect. I was so tense at the warehouse scenes my stomach was in a knot. My whole body was tense the entire movie. Johnny Depp managed to produce a suspensful thriller with no loud noises, no crashing vehicles and very little gore. It's brilliant with a David Lynch-like quality, sprinkled with playfullness. Definitely buy and watch this, even if you're not a Johnny Depp groupie. And if you are a groupie, he's in almost every scene. I read a review which said this was a slow-moving picture. Those with this opinion must be jaded people with no empathy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Take Care You Get A Complete Version of The Brave, March 31, 2009
This review is from: The Brave / The Piano II aka The Man Who Cried (2 DVD set - Import) (DVD)
The Brave is one of my favorite movies: powerful, unforgettable, beautifully filmed, great acting. However, if you need a Region 1 DVD please be very careful what you purchase. There is a Korean distributor whose copy of the film is missing 26 minutes. Its a very different film without those minutes!! A group of us are trying to get a complete region 1 version available in the US, but its going to take a while. I have heard that the VHS from Korea is fine. How can you tell if your missing those minutes? If early on your copy goes from Rafael sitting on a hill overlooking his family's trailer to pulling his kids out of the trailer to see the lights he's strung up -- you've been had. There is 20 whole minutes between those two scenes. So, buyer beware.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Brave, December 28, 2008

This is a beautiful film. Of all the characters Johnny Depp has played so far, his portrayal of Raphael touched me the most. The story is both poignant and heart-wrenching. Johnny plays Raphael with dignity and does not use the usual white-man's idea of what a Native American is like. I have watched this film several times and always feel that I have watched something truly special. Marlon Brando makes a brief but essential appearance in the movie and I always admired Floyd "Red Crow" Westerman who plays Raphael's father. It is a very welcome and very much enjoyed addition to my Johnny Depp dvd collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not allowed in the US, January 13, 2008

I've read that this movie is hard to obtain in the United States, and i just wanted to say it's because Johnny Depp received such poor critism here that he refuses to have it made or played in the US.

Besides that, it is an amazing film if you can get your hands on it. It is rare indeed that Johnny Depp does anything less than perfect.

This movie was great, it was mysterious and freaky all at once, what a way to die, makes you wonder and then go spend more time with your children...Great performance by Johnny Depp and Marlon Brando...

The Brave is important to see if you are a Johnny Fan. It is heartbreaking in that he is not a director. At all. Sorry folks, Johnny can't direct. At least not direct and act at the same time. Maybe if he'd done one or the other it would have been better but it just plain sucked. I want to kill myself when I say that because Johnny can do no wrong in my eyes and I'm glad he got to try it but he is an actor. The best. He can't direct. Very important to see Brando though. His last(?)performance, and as usual fantastic-favor for a friend. I spent two years wishing Johnny would redo this movie and re-release it. Now I've decided he just needs to forget it and never try that again. Besides that I found the portrayal of Native American life almost offensive. I've lived among them for most of my life and I didn't think he captured anythng really about them except maybe the dad splurging on his kids. But there are no Indians living in garbage dumps. That's for sure. And as for tract houses, they can all get one. The problem is who wants that?
