4.0 out of 5 stars wistful captivating & alluring
russ freeman and his formidable band the rippingtons have come up with another smooth jazz classic. like sipping on a cool chardonnay on a hot summer's evening this music slides into the very marrow of your bones. highlight is his cover of the 70s disco hit by the brothers johnson ain't no stoppin us now. it's totally reworked in a classic 90s upbeat groove.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I first heard The Rippingtons about 6 years ago on Jazz FM (UK). I really liked the smooth jazz sound but couldn't find any of their music in the shops here for years. Then I came across "Brave New World" in London and bought it. But instead of the really mellow music that I remembered, I found this album fairly monotonous and uninspiring. It isn't as...

5.0 out of 5 stars Unlike the rating above mine, I love this album!, June 10, 1999

The Rippingtons always have fantastic albums and I think that this one is near the top. The only part I don't like are their R+B crap that they put on it (luckily its only 2 songs) but other than that it's a must have for Rippingtons fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my Favorite Rippingtons albums!!, September 14, 2009
This review is from: Brave New World (Audio CD)
This is one of my favorite Rippingtons albums released back in 1995 (But I got my copy of it 10 years later in 2005!). My Favorite songs off this album are "Urban Wanderer", "Key to the Forbidden City", "Hideaway" and "Cicada". However I don't like the vocal songs so I ignore those tracks.

This CD marks the period when the Rippingtons expanded & tried new things (read the insert when you get this CD for more info). Featuring the talents of Scotty Scott & The Whisperers among others, this CD will surly be a hit in YOUR collection! Musicians: Russ Freeman (guitars & keyboards); Jeff Kashiwa (sax & EWI); David Kochanski (piano); Kim Stone (basses); Tony Morales (drums); Steve Reid (percussion); & guests which include Eric Marienthal & Brandon Fields (sax); Jerry Hey, Bill Reichenbach & Gary Grant (horns); Magic (all instruments on a few tracks); & many more.

While I applaud Russ and the band for entering a "brave new world" of music, I really like their other efforts much better. It definitely underscores the band's numerous talents, but I feel those talents were better displayed in other works. Leave the "brave new world" of urban contemporary and go back to the unique smooth jazz of the Rippingtons.

It isn't as musicically complex as I had remembered either. I am disappointed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not their best, February 10, 1999

This one disappointed me. It's still nice to listen to, but it's not the Rippingtons at their best. It seems a little wimpy at times and subdued.

1.0 out of 5 stars This may be their worst effort!, December 23, 2005
This review is from: Brave New World (Audio CD)
I have been a huge fan of the Rippington's. I began listening to them in the late 80's. This is long before this CD came out. I bought it and listened to it a few times and decided it wasn't going to remain in my collection. Their are a few good songs on it, but the techno-pop and remakes of other songs made me believe that this was the beginning of the end for the Rippington's good CD's. They have recovered some since that time, but this may be their worst effort!
