4.0 out of 5 stars Almost, but not quite., June 26, 2008
This review is from: Braveheart [Original Score] (Audio CD)
There are two versions of the score. The original soundtrack (green cover with orange fireball behind Mel Gibson) and Original Motion Picture (darker cover with no fireball) - both have the same track listings, number of tracks and length of tracks. Both say '1995'. So I guess you're just choosing between the artwork.

I can't fault the 18 tracks included in the original score, they're all good and true to what's in the film BUT, why did they exclude the music we hear when William's dead father is brought home? There are echoes of this theme in track [18. End Credits: Braveheart - Original Sound Track] and at the end of [9. Son's of Scotland] - a real sore point for me, especially as it didn't make it onto the 'more music from..' disc. No excuse!

Also missing is the festival wedding music before prima noctre is demonstrated. (this however IS on the 'more music from...' disc, as is the london wedding choir music!)

COMPOSITION: 5/5 - Events unfold in the same order as the film.

CONTENT: 3/5 - Not all of the music from the film is here. There are at least 3 memorable pieces not included, which is a let-down.

MIXING: 5/5 - The way it sounded in the film as you watched it is near identical. Some themes absent from the score do echo naturally in other tracks, but this happens in the theatrical score as well and is intentional.

Overall: 85%

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Soundtrack, February 24, 2010
This review is from: Braveheart [Original Score] (Audio CD)
I have watched this movie more times than I can count. I purchased the soundtrack and it is absolutely amazing. It takes you right into the movie and relaxes you. I used to put it on when I was studying. I highly recommend this CD!

5.0 out of 5 stars Enchanting soundtrack, January 11, 2010
This review is from: Braveheart [Original Score] (Audio CD)
This is an incredible soundtrack. Braveheart: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack has beautiful and emotive music. I felt transported to the Scottish Highlands by track 10. This is certainly James Horner's best soundtrack ever. I only wish I had discovered this album earlier. I love epic movie soundtracks, and Braveheart is one of the best I've ever heard. If you haven't listened to it yet, you should.

I love this movie. I also love the soundtrack. Mel Gibson is an awesome director, and so is James Horner, who is the Music Composer. Listening to the CD, it feels like I'm in the movie set, fighting with William Wallace against the 'bloody' English army. Thus, we're driving them out of Scotland. I'm glad that I get to own this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic music from beginning to end, March 20, 2009

This score is one of James Horner's absolute best. It's an incredibly strong album with multiple epic and gorgeous themes, fantastic celtic and bagpipe music, thunderous battle music, and two of Horner's finest pieces of music (in my opinion): For Love of a Princess, and Freedom...(this piece has a really long title, but it's track 17). The whole album is full of wonderful music, but these two are the highlights. The first starts softly and builds into an absolutely soul-stirring version of one of the main themes. The second is a lengthy cue that recaps much of the thematic material from earlier in the score and contains the standout moment from the score. This would be the music that accompanies Gibson's voice-over at the end of the film. Two themes are eventually played simultaneously (one performed by a whole bunch of bagpipes) and work just beautifully off of one another. The End Credits is fantastic. I could say great things about nearly every track here. Just buy it.
