Gr 2-5--Although these books are approachable and inviting, and include colorful illustrations, they don't succeed. All are plagued with factual errors and include fictionalized scenes and dialogue. Better-written biographies for the same age group emphasize similar ideals but do so far more subtly. For Gandhi, use Leonard Everett Fisher's study (Atheneum, 1995). David Adler's A Picture Book of Sitting Bull (Holiday, 1993) is simple but pertinent, as is Lucille Penner's easy reader (Grosset, 1995). Also try Robert Quackenbush's Clara Barton and Her Victory Over Fear (S & S, 1995) and Cindy Klingel's Clara Barton (Creative Ed., 1987).
