Kindergarten-Grade 1-Seeing his reflection for the first time, Sasha discovers that he doesn't look like all the other mice in his family-he has a big black ring around his left eye. While his mother always has said that he is handsome, he tries to cover up this distinguishing feature with flour, which washes away. But the birthmark is soon forgotten when Barnabas, a nasty alley cat, returns to threaten their neighborhood, and Sasha finds a way to place a bell around his neck. The concise and expeditious text contrasts with the richly textured illustrations, a luxurious mix of muted oranges, yellows, greens, and blues; most striking are the salmon-reds that highlight each creature's ears and nose. Well designed and well suited for storytime read-alouds, this tale is engaging. Children will be happy with the conclusion, too. Not only is the cat problem solved in a clever, noncombative manner, but Sasha's unique facial feature becomes widely regarded as the mark of a hero, as well.
