Brazil Samba,
By Pablo Parks "Pablo" (Bayonet Point, Florida) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Brazil Classics 2: O Samba (Audio CD)
Many loath this collection and say it is dated and that David Byrne did not make the best possible selections to represent classic Samba music. But this is one heck of a CD. The two opening tracks by Clara Nunes will leave you mesmerized by those vocals and sad over what could have been if not for her tragic death. Beth Carvahlo on track 7 is one of the best Samba numbers from the 80s I've ever heard. Many other big name artists from Samba's past are represented here and while maybe they aren't represented by their best works, they are displayed well and this is one nice collection.

This was my introduction to Samba, and is one of my all-time favorite albums. I can't understand a word of it, since I don't speak Portuguese, but that doesn't matter in the slightest. The rhythms and musicianship, the vocals and recording quality, but mainly the joyous happy SOUND of it remains a treat every time it plays. Writing this review reminded me there is more out there, so I just ordered the first collection, and am off to look for more from Clara Lunes and Alcione, two of the most seductive, husky-voiced women on the planet. Gals will find their counterparts in Cino Monteiro and Martinho Da Silva. Fabulous.

A masterpiece released in 1989, and probably the reason why David Byrne kept pushing the exploration of world music. A Must Have.

I have two in this series of CD's of David Byrne's collection of Brazilian pop music. They are longstanding favorites of mine. This purchase was to replace one recently lost in a move. The music is wonderful, also a historical archive as partial basis for contemporary Brazilian music. Danceable, singable, easy to listen to over and over again.

I'll probably never know how representative of samba this album is but I'll never care. This ranks up there with Bob Marley Legend and the Gypsy Kings Greatest Hits as one of those albums in which every track is an old friend that you are delighted to see again and relive the memories of days gone by.

I love Brazilian music. This album may be by various artists, which is fine. How can I make a choice of this album if I don't know what songs are on it or even how many recordings I would be buying? If I have missed something please inform me so I can change my rating.
