These travel books are absolutely terrific. They are detailed, current, filled with TONS of valuable information about their destinations, and are an incredible resource to 1) do historical research on potential destinations, 2) keep handy on your trip to learn tidbits of cultural info, and 3) as a reference guide on the "how tos" of getting in and around. For each trip, I try to find a "Handbook" or a TimeOut Guide. They are the best travel books out there!

TimeOut guides are bright, vivid, crazy useful, and are geared for the novice and the professional traveler alike. Handbooks are the same but they are not as colorful and filled with photos like other guides. The maps are a bit sparce and spartan, and the authors put so much information into such a small area that the text is often too small to read easily, especially on the go.

Although they are small in dimension, the books are not designed to be held by one hand for quick and frequent referencing while on the move. The hardback cover doesn't make for easy pocket storage, but are great for storing on a bookshelf after your trip. The Handbooks are best used for long stretches of inactivity or for quiet planning and recap while on your next adventure. I always make sure I have a Handbook with me, but for the latest "must see" travel destinations with corresponding maps that are hip (even edgy) consider TimeOut Guides; those looking for truly vivid vibrant colorful photos and visual information, opt for Insight Guides or even National Geographic. But for compact, comprehensive, encyclopedia-style, text-based detail and information for navigating unknown territory, the Handbooks can't be beat.
