He's intent on persuading her to make an adaptation of a novel, she feels that this would be a real indication of how low she has sunk. Worse still, the novel he has in mind is Pourquoi le Brésil, Christine Angot's highly personal best seller, and extremely difficult to adapt. But she needs the money, and reluctantly accepts, whilst doubting that she will be able to manage this impossible task. Pourqui (pas) le Brésil is precisely a film about the impossibility of making this film. Self-reflexive and multi-layered, it is a fascinating exploration of the challenge of finding the room for personal expression even within the structures of a directorial job for hire. Laetitia Masson's previous films, such as A vendre and Love Me, signalled her interest in stories about love and identity, and Pourquoi (pas) le Brésil takes these themes further, with the 'real' Laetitia Masson and her fictional self sharing the narrative. Although structurally complex, the film is no dull formal exercise, but rather an engaging and frequently self-deprecating study of the creative process. ...Why (Not) Brazil?
