Brazilian Percussion,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Brazilian Percussion Manual (Paperback)
This is solid introduction to Brazilian samba rhythms, and it's reasonably priced compared to some of the other books that you may have seen on Amazon. The focus here is on the instruments that you would find in a typical escola de samba (the baterias that play in Carnaval): repinique, surdo, tamborim, ganza and chocalho, caixa and agogo (also pandeiro, cuica and reco-reco). The examples of tamborim and caixa patterns are particularly helpful. There are also two scores with all the instrument parts so you can see how they work together. There's a section at the end for applying the rhythms to a drum set, which I personally have no use for, but it's useful to study these rhythms, too. I haven't looked at the other Brazilian percussion material out there. Nonetheless, this is a good introduction if you're just starting out and learning the instruments.
