Grade 4-6 --Siy presents information in a straightforward manner, using specific examples to illustrate general principles. She places readers in the jungle and acquaints them with their surroundings. The composition of the damp soil, its antiquity, and infertility are described, leading logically to the explanation that the ecosystem's nutrients are actually in the trees and plants. An excellent definition of biodiversity is provided by using the incredible number of species living in the rain forest and discussing their interdependence. Full-color photographs are interspersed throughout, contributing to the text's immediacy and effectiveness. They often provide an interesting point of view, e. g. a howler monkey with a human is captioned as clinging to `` . . . his fellow primate's arm.'' Activities to demonstrate the principles of each chapter are included, as are a two-page list of environmental organizations and an appendix suggesting ways of helping to save the rain forests. --Frances E.
