Konitz and The Brazilian Band...great stuff...,
By "douglasnegley" (Pittsburgh, Pa. United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Brazilian Rhapsody (Audio CD)
Lee Konitz is an alto sax legend. Here he teams up with Romero Lubambo, Duduka DaFonseca, Peggy Stern, and Dave Finck, along with Waltinho Anastacio on percussion. There is a track also, the famous "A Felicidade", with vocal by Adela Dalto. This is a wonderful samba trip with an alto sax. While Desmond's sound is smoother - almost classical sounding - the thing which makes this particular CD better than a similar one done by Desmond and Jim Hall in 1964 is the natural sound and authenticity of guitarist Lubambo. Comprised of almost all Brazilian bossa/samba standards, this CD has the sound, the dynamics, and the soft authentic rhythm of Lubambo's classical guitar that was missing from Desmond's "Bossa Antigua". I would recommend this CD highly in any bossa/samba collection, right up there with CDs in the same mold, like "Jazz Samba". This deserves some more recognition.
