Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Attorney MacDougal's first novel shows more than promise. In a large Philadelphia law firm, young associate Jenny Lodge is working with (and silently worshipping) brilliant, hard-driving partner Dan Casella. She helps Dan win a complicated case, and the two fall madly in love. But when Dan insists that she leave their law office if they're going to continue their affair, Jenny, angered, jumps to another firm. The plot doesn't shy away from such soapy elements?Jenny, it turns out, is carrying Dan's baby?but soon legal intrigue takes center stage. There's conniving and betrayal aplenty, with lots of old Main Line money and old secrets. Sharp readers may spot the crucial connection that results in a murder followed by a suicide. No one will be surprised, but everyone will cheer when Jenny and Dan reunite; the real pleasure here, however, is in experiencing MacDougal's sure grasp of the ups and downs of the legal life.

From Library Journal

Hotshot Philadelphia attorney Dan Casella and his green assistant, Jennifer Lodge, represent a rival law firm when an employee, Scott Sterling, tampers with a client's trust fund. Then, for propriety's sake after a passionate affair, Dan eases Jenny out of her job. Outraged, she quickly finds success with another firm. Yet she also finds herself pregnant and fails to tell Dan he's responsible. Meanwhile, Dan takes in his teenaged brother, Tony, to stem his growing delinquency, while Jenny also takes an unlikely roommate, Scott Sterling. The old case soon comes back to haunt them, and Jenny alone holds the key to avoiding disaster. Attorney (and former associate of President Clinton) MacDougal spins a Grisham-like plot filled with red herrings and sympathetic characters, with one exception: Dan Casella, a petulant bully whose idea of nurturing entails slamming his brother against the nearest wall. His comeuppance is almost as satisfying as the heart-pounding climax. This nifty first effort is recommended for all collections.?Laurel A. Wilson, Alexandrian P.L, Mount Vernon, Ind.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deeply satisfying, April 27, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Breach Of Trust (Paperback)
A wonder of a book that takes us inside the world of big law firms as well as the private lives of two lawyers who are fascinating both alone and together. A rare combination of smart, fast-paced suspense and a deeply moving story of real people. I read a lot of thrillers, legal and otherwise, but this one goes to the top of the list

5.0 out of 5 stars A gripping plot and wonderful characters!, April 22, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Breach Of Trust (Paperback)
I generally avoid reading lawyer books (thanks to Grisham overload), but I found myself unable to put this book down. I have lived most of my life in the Philadelphia area, and I worked in one of Philadelphia's large law firms, and MacDougal captured the essence of both quite well. It's difficult to believe that this is her first novel. She has clearly mastered the art of writing! I really felt that I knew, and had worked with, most of her main characters.

Breach of Trust is a real treat, and I highly recommend this one!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Action and pace keeps your interest peaked, March 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Breach Of Trust (Paperback)
This is the 2nd of Ms MacDougal books that I've recently read - both about a young female lawyer - I can't wait for her next one - she has a easy writing style that keeps you wanting to read "just one more chapter" before setting it down - I never sat it down - BTW I'm not young, or a lawyer, or a female, I just liked it.
