Editorial Reviews

Walter 'Junie' Morrison has never gotten his due as one of the funkiest badasses of his era. You'd think that co-founding the Ohio Players and writing/arranging/singing many of their early hits (particularly Pain and Funky Worm), then releasing three mind-blowing solo records on which he played every single instrument before joining P-Funk in time to co-write huge chunks of One Nation Under A Groove, Motor Booty Affair, Uncle Jam Wants You and Gloryhallastoopid would be enough to elevate a man to the exalted pantheon of widely-recognized funk geniuses. You would also be wrong, at least on the 'widely-recognized' part. Limited edition of 2000.

junie morrison started out with the ohio players but he was too weird for them so after a few years and a few trips with 3 solo records junie ended up with p funk in the late 70's aND DID MUCH WORK ON THE ALBUMS MOTOR BOOTY AFFAIR, AND ONE NATION UNDER A GROOVE, JUNIE CAME UP WITH THE BEATS ON KNEE DEEP, GLORYHAALLASTOOPID AND THEME OF THE BLACK HOLE AND ELECTRIC SPANKING OF WAR BABIES STILL PLUS BEFORE PRIN CE JUNIE WAS SINGING LEAD, BAckup, and played instruments on all his solo trackls a unheard and underappreciated genius these jams are on point and you can hear former bride of funkenstein lynn mabry on here who just left the brides and her and junie were involved during this time. you wanna hear classsic p funk and miss those funky weird synth sounds from the 80's cop this album you'll be on the mothership for light years.

I have been of Walter "Junie" Morrison's since day one. Seeing him perform with both the "Ohio Players as well as with Funkadelic/Parliament mothership. Is he underrated? Yes, he is highly underrated, even among some of his peers. Junie brings forth a different type of musicical landscape, that not for the typical radio listener. If you can only get down on one style of music, this is not for you. Junie has always incorporated intricate notes from all the instruments he can play. When he blends his timing of the various instruments together with that insane voice range of his, he creates a whole new sounds that is unique. With that said , let it be known here and now if never before that there is the funky side of Junie that is both fun and engaging in its own right. To deny this early funk master his due is truly incredulous.

For the beginner, let me say that this is a really cool, funky, and amazing collection of different levels of funk. Mixed with with dabs of woe, anger, blues, rock and plain old musical insanity. There have been many phases to his musical style, each has been unique in its own right and you can hear the growth of each new experience in his music. This is a great ride through the mind of creaters of the funk. For those who had the original Lps like I still do, you know these songs will bring back memories of some outrageous party nights. I never stopped listening to the music of the world, and I didn't always need the radio to know when some cool, funky music was hitting my ear drums.

Think you can keep up? If you can, you sir, and or madam, have joined the ranks of us funkateers, I.E. people that love to get their groove on whether they are happy or sad. After all, the funk is its own reward.

And wait until hear what he has done lately.

Walter Junie Morrison is one of those three career punches in the R&B world. He started out in the Ohio Players during their Westbound years, started a solo career mid decade and of course became a starring member/contributer to P-Funk before relaunching his solo career in the early 1980's. As one of the prime innovators of the "video game" style of melodic, high pitched funk synthesizer,a sound that's come to transcend decades and fashion Junie already had something good to go with anyway. Of course he's also a very unique artist anyway. He really loves to be eclectic musically. And he also enjoys blending genres in ways that are very different and sometimes may even sound incompatible. That probably has a lot to do with why George Clinton bought him into his fold to begin with. Sometimes though artists such as this seem to say more as part of a whole than as their own people. Lucky for us that was definitely not the case for Junie here.

This set presents Junie's 1980 recording 'Bread Alone' and 1981 realese '5'. Both of them showcase his interest in heavy songcraft, closer to the Ohio Players or Slave in that regard as opposed to P-Funk's more abstract sound. Still that influence cannot help but show up. "Love Has Taken Me Over (Be My Baby)" for sure has a Parliament aspect to production. But songs such as "Why" and especially "Seaman's First Class (Jock Rock)" have a much sleeker jazz-funk take with very strong sophistifunk overtones. As a mutli instrumentalist "everything man" his bass, keyboard and drum lines all pop and thunder right with the demands of the melody and arrangement. "Funk Parts" is a very straight synth funk groove, heavy on the video game synthesizer.
