Mama Bear is just taking bread out of the oven, but it is too hot for Ben Bear to eat before going to school. At school, Ben paints a picture of his mother, but the picture gets altered while walking home when his friends add their suggestions based upon their looks. When Ben Bear arrives at home, Mama Bear likes the picture, not because it looks like her but because it was painted by her son, and then she serves him the bread freshly made that day with honey.

Frank Asch's simple illustrations are so soothing to children. My som loves to read his stories over and over. I don't mind reading them because they are so pleasing to look at. This book shows Ben bear who has painted a picture of his mother at school. Ben is bringing the picture home to her when he meets with many friends. Each friend offers a suggestion for improving the picture. In the end, the portrait of mama bear has the eyes of an owl, the teeth of an alligator, the mane of a lion and the neck of a girraf. Naturally, mama bear thinks it is the most beautiful picture ever and hangs it up. This is a very sweet story!

I'm a kindergarten teacher and a mother. I think this is the best children's book ever written. I don't know why it's out of print when other Frank Asch books are still in print. Thank goodness for Amazon, where I found many used copies for my classroom, my son, and my friends!!!! Any child would love this book. If you are a teacher, you'll read it over and over to your students as they laugh anew each time!

I remember reading this to my son when he was a little boy, so of course, when he and his wife announced they were expecting their first child (and my first grandchild!), I purchased this book. It tells the story of how the mama loves her son's artwork "just the way it is!"
