Editorial Reviews

Colosseum Released Five Albums Between 1969 and 1971. The World’s First Ever Jazzrock Group Toured Non-stop for Nearly Three Years. The Band Finally Broke-up after Enjoying Chart Success in Several Countries. Twenty Three Years Later, in 1994, Colosseum Literally Picked-up Where They Had Left Off, Went Back on the Road Again, Played More Than 60 Dates Europe Wide, and Issued the "Lives Reunion Concerts 1994" Album and Video. During the Tour, They Began Writing and Demoing Songs for a New Album and the Resultant "Bread and Circuses" was Released in 1997. Further European Touring Activity Took Place as Colosseum Re-awakened Old Fans and Gained New Support Through the Sheer Quality of their Songs and Musical Showmanship. In 2003, the Band Released a New Studio Album, "Tomorrow’s Blues" which Stands as the Final Colosseum Recording to Feature Saxophonist, Dick Heckstall-smith Before He Passed Away. --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars The mature face of Colosseum, April 17, 2000
By
Rainer H Liffers (Perth, Western Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bread & Circuses (Audio CD)
Yes, "Bread and Circuses" is different - very different indeed. Colosseum have grown older, and so have their fans. More mature, wiser, more organised. No more wild improvisations to a point which almost destroyed the song (viz "Beware the Ides of March" and parts of the famous "Valentyne Suite"), no more "angry young men" display. This CD contains a healthy mix of well thought-out and organised songs, presented almost at the point of perfection. If you really loved Colosseum in the past, and if you have grown with them - then you will understand and love this CD. Mind you, yet another change is possible, and I look eagerly forward to Colosseum's next CD.

2.0 out of 5 stars At least they got back together..., November 28, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Bread & Circuses (Audio CD)
Jon Hiseman writes in the booklet: "If you are looking for <<Son of Valentyne Suite>> you can forget it... those days are long gone, for us, as well as you..." No kidding! If you loved the rock-jazz of the 70s Colosseum with those trademark fugues you will hate this CD. The sound reminds me of a watered down, boring mix of Blood Sweat and Tears, Steely Dan, and Chicago. Heckstall-Smith is vaguely decent only on a couple of tracks. Don't waste your money on this CD--buy the old ones. The rating is *two* stars instead of one (or zero) as an encouragement to stay together and rediscover their rock-jazz plus classical roots.
