More About the Author

Cheryl Toliver grew up in a religiously diverse and historically rich region of the western US, where spiritual experiences and a love of history were major influences that shaped her life. In college she studied anthropology, old world archaeology and history, comparative religions, and developed an interest in the sciences. She later completed a secondary education teaching certificate, traveled in the Middle East and Europe, and has worked as a history teacher, Christian educator, and an editor for an academic reference and database publisher.

Ms. Toliver's roots are deep in Christ, but she has experienced God's presence and love through people of many faiths, and thus she has been inspired to write from this broader, more encompassing perspective.

I have read Cheryl's first book, Wilderness Refuge and thoroughly enjoyed it. When Bread and Stone came out I couldn't wait to continue with this wonderful story of the lives of people who lived in Jesus time. I was so impressed with the historical accuracy of the background of the story and especially with the extenive 11 page bibliograpy at the end of the book. I learned and was entertained at the same time. I would highly recommend this book and am looking forward to the next one.

This story is broken down into 4 years, starting in the year 30 A.D. and ending in the year 33 A.D. We discover Yeshua, a rabbi who is stirring up the locals with the possibility of having some kind of spiritual power. Valerio Tullus, a man who turned to God as a result of a major life change, decides to seek the rabbi out.

The author knows her stuff and the book actually has some real background to it. The characters are in-depth and easy to get attached to. There's even some humor like in these lines below:

He kissed her cheek tenderly. "I guess I'm the fool now."

Her eyes brightened mirthfully, but she spoke seriously. "What happens now?"

"I - I don't know, not for sure, but, before we return to Jerusalem, I'll have to cut my hair and shave."

"Mm. Since I first came into your house, you've always had a beard." She stroked his beard with her calloused fingertips.

"Will you not want me when I'm clean-shaven?"

She smiled, hearing the tease in his deep voice. "I suppose, like lying with you, I will get used to it."

Cheryl Toliver's Bread and Stone continues the story of Valerio Tullus, a Roman living in Judea during the time of Jesus Christ's ministry. This is a wonderfully researched historical novel that makes you feel a part of times in which it is set. Actually historical figures play a part in the story adding to the historic realism. At the same time Miss Toliver creates fascinating, three-dimensional characters that draw you in and make you want to learn more about their lives, thoughts and motivations. I also enjoyed Miss Toliver's first novel, Wilderness Refuge and can't wait to read the next installment in her continuing story.

The characters drew me in and developed in interesting ways. I enjoyed learning about day-to-day life in Jerusalem in the first century A.D. I have never read a book which dealt with the reactions and questions of various people, Romans and Jews of many different points of view, to what Jesus of Nazareth was saying at this time. There is much to think about. The glossaries, time lines, and genealogies were most helpful. I read Ms. Toliver's earlier book, "Wilderness Refuge: A Prophet's Kingdom", and now am looking forward to another in the series.

Set in the early A.D. years, Bread and Stone: A New Kingdom, takes place at the time of Jesus. Those who are Christian or familiar with Christianity will find this novel of interest. You'll find that the author is obviously knowledgeable of the time period and Christian history (above just reading a few passages in the bible). It's well done and will appeal to fans of this genre.
