The cover says much about Break, but it is a bit misleading too. Enchant's third album is grimy, harrowing, and emotions laid bare. Yet, despite the often-lugubrious tone, Break combines the fat hooks of their earlier work with the atmospherics and diverse instrumentation of Wounded. When this album was released, it was the band's most balanced record up to that point. The lyrics, which were always great, are also better, more subtle but still forceful in their evocative depth.
The band's melodic awareness is completely impressive. I don't know how they put such infectious hooks in here. In "The Lizard," they write: "With the blade of deception sheathed the wounds can heal | Though you like the darker climes they shade you from the real | The game is fair when the players abide by the rules | You speak with forked tongue and cast yourself the fool." It's not a simple lyric, but the melody is so smooth and perfect that you can't avoid getting it netted in your head. I think _that_ is impressive songwriting. "My Enemy," one of the band's finest songs, features a brutal beauty captured by the unusual harmonies and a sense of crippling despair. "Break" opens the album with Ted Leonard flexing the range of his striking voice, and a composition that whispers and floats with crushing waves. "Defenseless" is a luscious electric-acoustic mix, stuck to a deep, seductive groove. "King" is a melodic playground. "My Cross" is a dark-tinged spark with ear-melting guitar lines wrapping it up. My copy of the album features a hidden eleventh track. It's called "Once A Week" and it's a great song that fits well onto the album.

Buy this album.
I'm not a great music reviewer. Heck...I'm not even a GOOD music reviewer. As such, it becomes a challenge for me to explain exactly WHY this album is so gripping. Sure...the music is fantastic and the lyrics fit in perfectly, but what good does that do you?
All I can really say is that there's not a single bad track on this cd, and about half the disk are highlights. King, My Enemy, Defenseless, Lizard, In the Dark, My Gravel Hand, The Cross, and Once a Week (a "bonus" track, whatever that means) are all absolutely incredible tracks....the kind of inspired genius you're lucky to find in more than a couple tracks of another cd.
And the rest of the songs? They're all remarkably solid...this cd has no lowpoint. Instead of offering peaks and valleys, this cd is a huge mountain range. (Hey...I admitted from the start I'm a lousy music reviewer ;).
In the intention of not further humiliating myself, I'll close out now after saying one more thing. This cd is the reason digging through the musical underground is worth the while. This band is a diamond, and it deserves removal from the rough.

This is probably the most significant album in Enchant's history. Before Break, the merit of Enchant's music laid mainly on the potential they had. Even though their music was good, there was always room for improvement. Their songs lacked maturity and character.
Break came as a tremendous leap forward for Enchant. While keeping their unique style, they evolved their sound adding strength and elegance to it. The result was simply breathtaking. The power on some of Break's pieces is unmatched even by Juggling 9 or Dropping 10, which I consider to be their best album. I'm addicted to Break. It will always have a special place in my ever-growing music collection.

A Few Of My Favorite Bands : Iron Maiden / Rush / Fates Warning
===============================================================

WOW!!!...

I'm not sure how you would classify this, but I know one thing, it's a masterpiece. Enchant has very quickly become one of my favorite bands, and "Break" is one excellent release from start to finish...

The best way to compare this style of music is a mixture between Fates Warning and Rush. That's just my opinion, and if you like masterful musicianship, Enchant is the band for you no matter what kind of music you enjoy. The vocals are crisp and clean, and the songs are beautiful and powerful. The guitars are excellent, and quite melodic at times. They have a unique sound that is very impressive...

Fates Warning's epic releases "Parralles" and "Perect Symmetry" are very similar in sound and feel to "Break". Enchant's vocalist sounds more like Kansas's Steve Walsh than Fates vocalist Ray Adler IMO. Which is great here, because his voice is extra clean. Very impressive.

There is not one thing wrong with this release. From start to finish, it's a brilliant release. Huge things are coming from Enchant in the future, and this was one of the earlier materpieces that deserves your full attention...

Out of my collection of 500+ CDs, I'd put "Break" in my "Top 10." I was surprised to see that someone else said this CD wasn't as good as either of Enchant's prior CDs, as I think this is their best work yet. I loved their first two CDs, too, but I think "Break" is even more consistent. If you loved "Distractions" from their "Wounded" CD, or "Open Eyes" from the "Blueprint" disc, you'll probably agree that "Break" is their best yet overall.
