Product Description

When the United States Military issued PD-48, a purchase description of properties for a single, multi-purpose product to maintain their weaponry, it became known as the "impossible specification" because of its severe requirements. The first product to meet the challenge - Break-Free CLP. Break-Free's flagship product, CLP is a unique formulation of synthetic oils and individual proprietary ingredients which synergize in combination to do three important tasks simultaneously: Effectively Clean, Lubricate and Protect metal. Break-Free CLP is now recognized around the world as the standard by which maximum metal performance and protection is ensured.

Customer Reviews

Quite decent product that's best used in conjunction with other solvents/lubricants.

The good thing about this solvent is that after you wipe away the solvent for cleaning, the surface s already coated in a thin layer of oil for rust protection.

There are a few products out there that can perform one of its functions better, but they typically cost a LOT more.

Break-Free CLP is a great all-around product, but it works differently than most solvents/cleaners and oils. This product contains both the solvents and oils in one mixture. The solvents evaporate out of the mixture fairly rapidly, leaving the oils in place to lubricate and protect. It's going to feel a bit different - even after you wipe everything down with dry cloths or patches, it will feel wet for 10 to 20 minutes. It will seem like it's over-lubricated and that wiping it dry just doesn't help. Wipe it dry and set it aside for 20 minutes. Once the solvent evaporates, it will feel right. Some people will be annoyed by this trait; some people won't care.

Check out the formal and informal tests on CLP and other products - they are all over the internet. Look at actual tests, not just personal anecdotes like these reviews. You'll find plenty of comments good and bad, but actual testing invariably rates CLP among the top performers.

Against general-purpose gun cleaners and solvents, it rates good to great. Against general-purpose gun lubes, it's great to excellent. There are a few products out there that can perform one of its functions better, but they typically cost a LOT more.

I use it on all my guns - revolvers, pistols, rifles, shotguns. It comes up a little short on cleaning filthy shotgun barrels. It works, and works well, but the amount of carbon and plastic residue from the wadding requires an awful lot of CLP. I get better results from a good solvent or a shotgun-specific product. I follow up the solvents with a few dry patches, a CLP-dampened patch, and a couple more dry patches.

Just bought this today at Walmart (same 4oz aerosol can) for $3.97, so beware of getting grossly overcharged. Quite decent product that's best used in conjunction with other solvents/lubricants.

Over the years I have tried a few different cleaner and lubricating products, and just found out about Break-Free CLP a couple years ago. The first thing that impressed me was that it was really nice to have Cleaner-Lunbricating-Protectant components available in one product.

I grew up as a pistol and shotgun guy and just recently started getting into rifle competition and plinking. Pistols and shotguns are simple to breakdown and clean, but some rifles are a little more complex. For example, the recessed areas of the AR configuration are a challenge to clean, and the small pieces of its bolt carrier group need to be cleaned regularly too. What is nice about Break-Free's aerosol product's delivery it how easy it makes it getting the cleaner to where it is needed. Once the cleaner gets to where it is needed, I can use long handled brushes to scrub and clean... but it was tougher getting cleaner into those area before using this aerosol delivery.

Cleaning the BCG is simple with this product; break down the bolt carrier, put the parts in a bowl, douse them with this CLP's spray, and let them sit. After just a few minutes the grime has mostly melted away and all I need to do is give them a good scrub with light brushes and then wipe them down with a cloth.

Will still test and try other products, but this has been our mainstay for the past two years. It is hard to get around here as it sells out of stores about as fast as it hits the shelf... definitely recommended. One can lasts me about eight cleaning sessions of three to four firearms at a time.

This product works well (when you follow the directions) perfect! It cleans and lubricates I use it on my shotguns and handguns. with a little brushing I have been able to keep up my collection of firearms as good as new. Also the can has lasted me 2 years and I clean my guns very regularly.

Does a good job of dissolving/removing gunk, and easily distributes lube throughout. I personally like to spray a shot of automotive carburetor cleaner in first to remove the extra heavy crud buildup, and follow up with the CLP after to re-lube. I like the aerosol better than bottled oil, since it's easier to get it where you need it, and it is actually less messy to use. It's not a one-stop substitute for a cleaning kit, but it's about as close as you're gonna get.

Pro: Good at cleaning. Works as advertised.

Con: The "P" stands for preservative, which is that it stays lubricated. The problem is that it does not wipe off easily (or at all) meaning any use of this on the outside of your guns will leave your gun greasy If you put it away before this dries (in a month or two), your case/bag will also be greasy. Recommend wearing gloves when using, as your hands will require dish soap to remove it.
