Editorial Reviews

From Kirkus Reviews

Veteran author Babson continues to coast, this time with another outing for her wacky duo of aging actresses Trixie Dolan and Evangeline Sinclair (Even Yuppies Die, 1996, etc.). They're still living in an inconvenient apartment in London's Dockland while incessantly searching for pub-theaters for possible acting vehicles. The show at the Happy Larry is one of the more promising, and the two are made much of there by a group of male locals whose chief occupation seems to be some sort of betting game. Sweetums Carew, another out-of-work old-timer, sometimes joins them--until the night she takes a fatal tumble on the pub's steep staircase. Visiting the Green Colleen pub results in another kind of disruption in their lives. The bar's live-in dog, a wolfhound named The Semtex, follows the ladies outside, refuses to go back, and is eventually taken over by their scriptwriter friend Lucy, leaving Trixie to cope with threats of physical violence from Dorsal Finn, the dog's owner. But the real threat, and there is one, comes from another source, and Trixie barely manages to survive it--in a climax that sorts out the mysteries surrounding events in the two pubs. Babson's usual amiable, giddy mixture (lots of glitter, little substance) is likely to be most appreciated by the author's legion of fans. -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. From AudioFile

Zany actresses Trixie and Evangeline seek an appropriate play in which to revive their flagging careers. As usual, they leave chaos in their wake. But then murder takes center stage, and the ladies must seek a killer while keeping one step ahead of the action. Nadia May does an excellent rendering of the witty, aging thespians. She also presents a wonderful recreation of the Irish pub landlord who provides a venue for their struggling theatrics. Semtax, the wolfhound who "dogs" the ladies, adds to the fun by providing fodder for puns galore. Babson's lively characters and crisp dialogue are perfect for the audio medium. S.G.B. 4.0 out of 5 stars Two eldely actresses look for a role, but find murder., March 29, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Break a Leg, Darlings (Hardcover)
Trixie Dolan and Evangeline Sinclair refuse to accept the fact that they
are aging, former screen star greats. They reject all offers of roles that
are closer to their age because they are all poor, stereotypical parts. So
what do two former superstars do when they cannot find the roles they feel is
fitting for them? Simple, they make the rounds of the English pub theaters
seeking the perfect part. Each night, the duo suffers horrendous indignities
as they deal with the theatrical fringe who for the most part have no talent.
Trixie and Evangeline must cope with horrendous colloquy, even worse acting,
and the slummiest of locales and productions.
......As the search continues for a budding Shaw to star the pair in the next
great English play, Trixie and Evangeline are unaware of the danger that they
are in from an unknown stalker. Even one of their rivals was recently killed
and Trixie was shoved down a set of stairs. If the duo is not more careful
where they go for the nirvana of acting roles, they may find themselves
starring in the wrong production: the double murder of two aging actresses by
an unknown assailant.
......BREAK A LEG, DARLINGS is a humorous English cozy that fans of the
sub-genre will appreciate due to the constant bickering and droll antics of
the two female pals. However, in spite of the charm and the crazy situations
that Trixie and Evangeline always seem to find themselves starring in, the
novel is a classic cozy: limited action and suspense, making it not
everyone's cup of tea.
