Produced by Richard Perry (Rod Stewart, Ray Charles, Pointer Sisters, Barbra Streisand, Carly Simon, Ringo Starr, Tina Turner, Diana Ross, Harry Nilsson, Julio Iglesias/Willie Nelson, Art Garfunkel, The Temptations, Leo Sayer, Pattie LaBelle, Manhattan Transfer, Neil Diamond, Randy Travis, Martha Reeves, Jeffrey Osborne, Fats Domino, and Ella Fitzgerald - to mention a few), Breakaway is an album that takes you to the most contemplative place you could ever go when listening to a pop album. It isn't like the harder stuff Pink Floyd offered up on Dark Side Of The Moon, which takes you to a place of the entertaining side of insanity - layered & a bit bipolar. By contrast, Breakaway is one of those albums that covers different angles of being in love, and tackles them all in one set. Wanting, missing, yearning, and living with a broken heart. It is from an era long gone, has sound qualities that consist of acoustic strings and guitars and drums, a little folky at times, but offers some of the best singing and performances from a stellar A-List background artists. The short list:

* Toni Tennille - vocals
* Stephen Bishop - guitar, vocals
* Graham Nash - vocals The Hollies, CSN)
* Paul Simon - guitar, vocals
* Andrew Gold - guitar, vocals (Lonely Boy, Thank You For Being a Friend)
* Nicky Hopkins - keyboards (Rolling Stones)
* Bruce Johnston - piano (The Beach Boys)
* David Crosby - vocals (The Byrds, CSN)
* Larry Knechtel - keyboards; Russ Kunkel - drums; Joe Osborn - bass; Leland Sklar - bass (James Taylor, Jackson Browne, Mamas and the Papas, the Carpenters, Fifth Dimension. The Association, etc.

This album sounds every bit as fresh as it did when it was released. Give it a listen and notice how the years have changed pop music. More economical in its sound, one could say innocent in sound, yet not in subject matter--this is a very romantic album, for those who can still appreciate the true aphrodesiac romance can be. Tracks like "My Little Town", a Paul Simon tune sung together with Art makes this listener long for what their continued collaboration could have been. "Lookin for the Right One", "Same Old Tears", and "99 Miles from LA", showcase Art's fabulous tenor, phrasing, and knack for the dramatic. Sure it is a little emotional, isn't that one of the things that makes music great?

One of the 60's and 70's silken male voices. The mid-70"s was a neverending string of middle of the road classics. Romance and disco filled the air (waves) with hope and possibility. "Breakaway" was one of those LP's that went on like a Rachmaninov symphony. Each song blended into the next (and not like mindless muzac). But rather like melodic lullabies you want to forever memorize. "I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever)" and "I Only Have Eyes For You" are always acknowleged as the two great tunes on this LP. However, the one I thought that really deserved the prize was "99 Miles From L.A.," one of Albert Hammond's best efforts. "Breakaway" is a great tune. "Disney Girls" and "My Little Town" also quickly caught my ear. It was a great surprise this CD available and great to hear it again, only this time on CD.

With his impossibly high pop tenor voice, Art Garfunkel found his best solo material ever on this collection of gorgeously arranged pop songs. Stevie Wonder's I BELIEVE... is simply jaw-dropping; THE WATERS OF MARCH has a kicky, memorable poetic lilt; MY LITTLE TOWN still stands the test of time as Simon and Garfunkel's cryptically brilliant "comeback" duet. There is no clunker on this album, and it is arranged with an orchestral feel that sounds instantly classic. With melodies like these, and with an angelic voice like Art's to steer the course, it is no wonder this album has remained one of my all-time favorites from the 70s through today.

This is a magnificent album. I purchased on vinyl in 1975 when I was stationed in Germany. I have replaced it with cds (2- lost the first, replaced it with another copy, and of course immediately found the first cd) and expect I will eventually transition to downloading it to some MP3 player (will have to have my kids help me with this). This is magnificient because the lyrics have the same quality as a song written by Irving Berlin, or a Lerner & Loew musical (or a host of other writers from my father's time). It is a very romantic, sensitive album that unabashedly expresses masculine romanticism without pretext and insecurity. I am certain that when my daughter gets married I will choose a cut from this album for our father-daughter dance; not sure which one, but an appropriate one that conveys a message and transcends time (to my future son-in-law). BTW, don't confuse this album title with one by Kelly Clarkson of the same title (interesting how a successful title can be). If you want own non electron copy buy it while you still can.
