Book Description

8 and upAn Avon Camelot Book
Twelve-year-old Luke Espinosa dreams of becoming a great soccer player--a dream that seems impossible, since Luke has never played soccer and doesn't even own a ball. But one day he spots an old, discarded soccer ball and his spirits soar. With his own ball, he can practice every day until he' s good enough to make the school team. Then Luke discovers that his father, who left when Luke was a baby, is a professional soccer player. Now Luke is sure his dream is coming true. Soccer is in his genes. He'll go live with his father and learn to play the game he loves.

So when he's ridiculed and challenged by one of the school's star players, he makes an impossible promise. He agrees to meet the bully for a match--the bully's team against Luke's own team. The problem is that Luke doesn't have his own team . . . or any soccer skills . Then Luke gets a letter from his father, who says there's no room in his life for Luke. It's time for Luke to stop just dreaming...and find the inner courage to make his dreams come true.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-7. Luke Espinosa, 12, dreams of the day he will meet his father, a professional soccer player in Mexico, and learn the skills of the game from him. Unfortunately, that day never comes for Luke, who has to endure the humiliation of a rejection letter from his father and then face the town bully in a challenge match. Luke lives in a trailer in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and his single mother's difficult financial situation doesn't allow extra money for luxuries such as joining a soccer team or buying the necessary equipment. His soccer ball has come from someone's trash. Then Luke makes friends with a new student, Amelia, who was a soccer player in her former neighborhood. She is eager to gather a team of girls to help him meet his challenge. With this encouragement, he develops self-esteem in spite of adversity and a sense of humor as well. In her first novel, Little has created a fully realized character. Both boys and girls will empathize with Luke's situation and cheer him on during the soccer match.?Blair Christolon, Prince William Library, Manassas, VA

From the Publisher

Before she was an officer aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise...

No one ever said Starfleet Academy would be easy, but Cadet Deanna Troi never expected it to be this hard, either. She's been taken prisoner by pirates on the Borocco-Kai, and now she's weaponless and helpless.

Of course, its only a test: a holodeck exam all freshmen must pass. But for Deanna, the stakes are even higher than usual. She's opted to take the test early because it seemed like the only way to save her future at the Academy. Her telepathic abilities, natural aloofness, and an overbearing mother have made it difficult to gain the trust of her peers, and even harder to focus on her studies. Deanna has been sinking -- fast!

But if this test is her only way back up, Deanna's in deep trouble! Unless she taps into her inborn abilities and saves the Borrocco-Kai...an along with it, her career in Starfleet.END --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for young teens w/suspense, mystery, joy, soccer., November 4, 1997

This review is from: Breakaway (Hardcover)
I started this book and couldn't put it down. I felt it was written with all the elements needed for a great story, even for adults to read. It was sad, joyful, suspenseful, had an interesting character development, was positive yet realistic. I have decided to read this book to a group of teenagers (14-16 year old) because it teaches values in a sports setting without being mushy. Great book for anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars An awesome book!, March 25, 2006
A Kid's Review
This story about Deanna Troi is the one of the best in the series! This story tells about Deanna's troubles with being empathic. She decides to take the Borrocco-Kai or the big washout and she succedes. Her mother (who is a full telapath) finally figures out that her daughter is old enough to handle the stress. Tis story also tells of Troi's decision to be a counseler on one of those new galaxy-class starships.
