This device is really not intended to replace a professional skate sharpening machine that is done in the pro-shops. However, for touch ups or emergency sharpening or to get a minor ding out while your on the bench this gets the job done. I find you can extend how long you have to go between sharpening too, so it will more than pay for itself over time. It is adjustable and easy to use. You should also get the replacement drums too because they do wear out. It is pretty simple to operate. For the money...it is a must-have in your hockey bag.

since we don't live near a place that sharpens skates i decided to purchase this skate sharpener and it works great it's easy to use and it only takes a few minutes to sharpen your skates.

The Skate Mate has two adjusting knobs. When it arrived, one would not move at all. I put a few drops of oil on it, and it freed it right up.

The Skate Mate performs as advertised. My blades are now pristine every skate. I live and work 30 minutes from the pro shop, so it's not very convenient sometimes to get my skates sharpened. This tool fills in the gap perfectly.

I use this unit for once-a-month freshening of blade edges. Easy to adjust to different blade widths. The only problem with the particular one I received, was that the little abrasive cylinder was not quite centered in the channel, thus not allowing the unit to sharpen blades evenly. I remedied this by taking the unit apart and rethreading the little thumbwheels evenly at each end and checking the centering of the cylinder. This took a couple tries, but I got it back to center alignment. A minor nuisance, but since I like tinkering with things, this was not much of an issue for me. Most of the units shipped out should not have this problem. Mine was probably a rare misalignment. Works better than the old chrome-plated "egg-shaped" sharpener I have used in the past, which contained a hardened steel cutting disc for sharpening. Overall, for the price, I like this unit.

The jury is out on this one. very hard to move the wheels. and you really do not know if you blades are getting any better> i recommend a sharpening stone for the burs> i wish some one would make an affordable machine>

This sharpens my skates and has saved me a lot of money! I absolutely love it!If you want to sharpen your skates for cheap, get it!

I got this primarily to dress up my goalie skate blades; after each game the steel blades would build up corrosion overnight no matter how carefully I dried them. This tool does the trick; just a few swipes and the blade edge is ready to go... saves quite a bit of sharpening and pre-game prep.

Rather than having to buy new, more-expensive, top-of-the-line skates with stainless steel blades, this tool works well for me (old, cheap goalie!).

Easy to use,but I had trouble with the knob tightening and loosening_difficult to move_but becomes easier as I used it more and more.Red plastic grip became loose_possibly because I tightened the knobs to much the first time, and forced it along the blade?

Bought this skate sharpener because it was much cheaper than the Pro-Filer (about $60). This is a piece of junk. The construction is flimsy and poor and it does not slide smoothly over the blade at all. Buy a Pro-Filer instead. It works much better.

The adjustment wheels were poorly made, difficult to turn. This is crucial since the instructions specify that precise alignment is necessary to avoid damaging the skate edge. In any case, the process is neither easy, nor straightforward, especially given the shoddiness of the mechanism. I gather that some people have gotten this unit to work properly but mine is going straight into the trash.
