5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant song by Mariah. One of her standout performances, December 30, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Breakdown (Audio CD)
One of the songs included on Mariah's "Butterfly" CD, this is truely a brilliant song. The single includes the album version of "Breakdown" as well as some other mixes including a Radio version (which cuts out the Bone Thugs'n'Harmony rap in the middle), and a Bone Thugs mix which includes extra vocals and rhythms from the group. The song shows Mariah's incredible talent not only as a vocalist, but her brilliant rhythm and beat compositions, which in this song are remarkable. The lyrics float effortlessly over a smooth melody which is brought to life by the background vocals of Bone Thugs and Mariah herself. The lyrics relate to being on the receiving end of a realtionship breakup, and the efforts one goes to hide the pain "..Underneath the guise of a smile, gradually I'm dying inside..", which coming from Mariah, sounds very personal. Also on the single are a few "Honey" remixes by David Morales. These have heavy dance beats and are not really a showcase of the great song by Mariah, but rather a showcase of David's talent for cutting a good dance mix. If you like "Honey" I would strongly recommend the official "Honey" single which is also available here on Amazon.com This includes the Bad Boy remix which is greatly superior to the album version of the song, as Mase, Puff and others do their thing. Also on the Honey single are a few So So Def (Jermaine Dupri) mixes which are excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Steady breakin' me on down, April 14, 2010

Breakdown is easily one of Mariah's most underrated collabos. Remember Bone Thugs'N'Harmony of Crossroads fame? They team up to create a piano led song that's equally somber and seductive. Pretending to move on from a failed relationship, Mariah breaks down and cries over her ex in private. Mariah's whispery vocals work perfectly along side the Thugs "speak sing" raps. The Mo' Thugs remix is even better. "Don't wake up yet it's over, over......"

5.0 out of 5 stars You must buy this single, November 3, 1998
By A Customer

I just got this cd today. I had to have it special ordered since its an import single. I had my doubts on whether it would be worth $ 12.99 for a single, but boy, I'm glad I took the chance. I love this song so much. Its worth the money to hear all the remix versions that are not on her album. In my opinion, this is the best song she's ever done and you will not be dissapointed if you buy this cd. It's worth $12.99 and a whole lot more. The only thing wrong I can find about it is that it was released in Australia, Asia and UK and not here!!
