spiegelman's earliest,
By A Customer
This review is from: Breakdowns: From Maus to Now, an Anthology of Strips (Hardcover)
Before turning America on to the potential of the comix medium with the Pulitzer Prize-winning "Maus", art spiegelman was a leading underground cartoonist. This book is an early collection of his best, including a 3-page version of "Maus," which led to his later opus. The highlights of this collection, though, cover a much broader range, from abstract experiments with the comix medium, to darkly personal stories. At a signing a few years back, art told me there were only 6,000 copies of the book published. So it's a rarity to boot.

Note that this book is out of print, and had a small printing - it is thus very rare and expensive. However, it has been reprinted in facsimile edition as the centerpiece of: Breakdowns: Portrait of the Artist as a Young %@&*!, which is where you can get it! The better works (the original Maus, and Prisoner on the Hell Planet) are quite good. Some of the other ones are...entertaining experimentalism (to be generous). If you're interested in this, you're likely also interested in RAW magazine, which aimed to publish a similar style. |
