Book Description

January 30, 2004
There was a Breaker Morant he was executed at Pietersburg on 27 February 1902. His crime? Wilful murder of civilians. Yet to this day his guilt remains in doubt. Kit Denton's novel, The Breaker, does more than recount the facts and mystery surrounding Morant's death sentence. Full of action and set in three continents, it covers the entire range of the Breaker's activities. We see him as a champion horseman, a likeable larrikin, a popular balladist. We see him in love and in war. Then we see him face the firing squad that will end his life. Was he a cold-blooded killer or a scapegoat?

Editorial Reviews

From AudioFile

It's a rare but joyous occasion when an audiobook simply grabs your attention from the opening lines and will not let you rest until you've reveled in its entirety. This listener discovered this title after it had won the 1998 Audie Award for best unabridged fiction. Then unsuspecting, I initiated my voyage to the outback of Australia and to South Africa and the Boer War, and, in the process, became fascinated with Harry Morant, executed in 1902 for the murder of civilians. "Breaker" Morant is a charismatic, tragic figure. Terence Donovan becomes Morant, the soldier, horsewhisperer, poet and "larrikin," Australian slang for a rowdy. Using Australian and British accents that subtly catch a hint or class of characteristic speech, Donovan brilliantly captures the officers, soldiers, and folk who inhabit the story. His narrative is elegant, brutal and heartbreaking in turn, as he spins out this compelling drama. More than just delivering a great story and wonderful characters, Donovan makes listeners care about every injustice or small triumph in this exceptional audiobook. R.F.W. An AudioFile Earphones Award winner. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book !, March 2, 1998

This review is from: The Breaker (Hardcover)
Brings to life the times and tragedy of Harry "Breaker" Morant. From his time in the bush to his execution at the hands of the British for allegedly shooting POWs in the Boer War. Even if it doesn't quite follow the facts, it's a great read !
