Editorial Reviews

Critics say: Somerville, Mass., soft-focus pop duo Gem Club are Christopher Barnes and Kristen Drymala. Together, they create cavernous-sounding piano-based ballads that, despite their earthly trappings, feel truly ethereal, as if they're being piped in from another planet bereft of gravity. Gem Club buries vague but revealing lyrics in delicate, sometimes somber, sometimes lighthearted melodies. There is a balance between pain and hope, a sense of growth and catharsis spawned from harder days, all complemented by the breathy vocals and symphonic instrumentation.

I heard of this band by a facebook post by Phantogram, an electronic, upbeat pop group so naturally, that's what i was expecting. That is so far from what I got. I say that but it isnt a bad thing. This music is soft and piano driven with smooth, really nice vocals. It kind of reminds me of Bon Iver, but a more stripped down version. Not something to listen to when you are energetic but it is definately a beautiful album with a nice sound. I'm looking foreward to hearing more from Gem Club.

Melancholy but upliftingly beautiful. Very restrained and piano driven, some light percussion. Vocals are excellent and make you feel like you are floating above yourself in a dream. Album is consistent....the songs don't feel like they stand alone ( which makes an album to me). This was a find for me from NPR. One of my favorites of 2011. I keep coming back to it. It seeps into you and and won't let go....

This is a great disc if you happen to be a fan of stuff like the Antler's Hospice or their Burst Apart record. It's got a similar minimalist feel. Same slowish tempo, some might even label this "slow-core" or whatever, but I wouldn't. That's mostly because I'm a nihilist, though, and we hate labels, man.

Good stuff. Not exactly workout music for your sweaty gym visits. Maybe better suited for writing suicide notes or in between illegally downloading Cure records. I likes it...
