3.0 out of 5 stars A satisfying conclusion to a good mystery series
The fourth entry in Blackstock's Cape Refuge series finds a couple of murders, a new baby and a wedding occurring on the small island, all within a short span of time. Jonathan and Morgan are expecting (their infertility travails are documented in the third entry in the series); Cade and Blair are going to the chapel (theirs is the most realistic romance); and, of...

This review is from: Breaker's Reef (Cape Refuge, No. 4) (Paperback)
In Breakers Reef, the fourth in the Cape Refuge series, the body of a well-liked teenage girl from Cape Refuge is discovered by Chief Cades' rookie officer, Scott Crown. The body has been staged to look like a murder described in the novel written by an eccentric mystery writer who recently moved to town. Clues planted by the murderer's accomplice lead the Cape Refuge police (and the reader!) to false conclusions. Soon after the first murder, there is another, this time discovered by the Chief himself. As law enforcement struggles to find solid evidence and sort the real clues, three people go missing. It's a race to find them before one of them ends up dead.

Life can't wait for the satisfactory conclusion of a murder investigation; Chief Cades' romance with Blair Owens progresses, Blair's sister Morgan is nearing the end of a high-risk pregnancy, Sheila Caruso is facing a set back in her faith, not to mention her hard-earned freedom--and there's a new troubled teen in town.

The mystery is satisfying and complex enough to challenge the reader, but the real gems in this series are the characters, broken people who've struggled with demons and questioned God. They've faced their share of life's hard knocks but find healing and a second chance at Hanover House.

Armchair Interviews says: Returning to Cape Refuge in Breakers Reef is like going to Cabot Cove, Maine, with Jessica Fletcher. Only in Cape Refuge the characters find their redemption in Christ, not a middle-aged detective!

4.0 out of 5 stars Bring on the Red Herrings!, June 20, 2006
This review is from: Breaker's Reef (Cape Refuge, No. 4) (Paperback)
I think this is the most satisfying mystery from Teri Blackstock yet. Without giving away the ending let me just hint that I was totally fooled by the Red Herrings in this mystery. As good as the story line is I agree with other reviewers that the characters drive this story (as in all good novels). The thread of restoration is strong throughout the story and the bond of parent and child is powerful. This is an excellent ending to a very good series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great series!, July 13, 2005
This review is from: Breaker's Reef (Cape Refuge, No. 4) (Paperback)
Breaker's Reef is the fourth and final book in the Cape Refuge Series. I have read all of the books in these series except for the very first one. Without having read any of the series, you can easily enjoy any of the books, but having that extra history with the characters does make it special. This final book opens with the classic Terri Blackstock heart-wrenching bang! Once you cast your eyes on the gruesome details of the crime, you might as well make yourself comfortable. I have to force myself not to skim down the page!
--Tyora Moody

When the police find the body of a teenager, the investigation starts off shakily because an overzealous rookie tampers with the crime scene. It does not take a long for several folks to become suspects including the Chief of Police himself. In the midst of the criminal investigation, another story involving the ex-con Sheila Caruso slowly begins to connect with the crime.

Sheila has finally found a job as a typist for an eccentric author. While transcribing a tape, she stumbles across a chapter that is very similar to the crime scene. Little does Sheila know this discovery will be minor to the one that has arrived in Cape Refuge looking for her. Eighteen years ago, Sheila gave up a baby girl for adoption. The young woman has arrived in town seeking to meet her birth mother, but they never meet. Another body has been found and soon Sheila's daughter Sadie turns up missing. With both of her daughters in danger, Sheila's faith is tested as she struggles with her past and the consequences.

Terri Blackstock weaves a tale of mystery and suspense that examines how destructive sin can be in our lives. Underneath the fast-paced storyline is a gentle reminder of redemption and God's grace. This is an awesome series so I encourage you to grab book one and have fun.

Terri Blackstock you did it again!! Just when you think a writer has reached a climax in tallent. Terri just shocked me again. This book was so good I could not put it down for a second. What a close to a series. To bad this is it. Her character development was incredible, the story weaves so perfectly. Without giving any of the story away. I would suggest read the books before this. As for this book all I can say is "WOW"!!! A must read!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Breaker's Reef, November 9, 2006
This review is from: Breaker's Reef (Cape Refuge, No. 4) (Paperback)
This book was one of the best books that I have read in awhile. The whole series by Terri Blackstock is excellent. This is the kind of book you can't wait to find out the end but, you hate to finish reading it.
My 14 year old daughter also read it too and loved it. If you are a fan of mysteries and also of romance you should pick this one and the whole series up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Series, September 17, 2005
This review is from: Breaker's Reef (Cape Refuge, No. 4) (Paperback)
Terri Blackstock's BREAKER'S REEF is book four of the CAPE REFUGE series and another bestseller quality narrative. Each book in the series will stand on its own but reading each book in the series increases the intensity of each plot driven tale. I am always proud to recommend any Blackstock novel. This author is a master at weaving GOD and his unconditional love through out the twists and tunnels of her action packed mysteries. Blackstocks books are difficult to put down to do life's daily chores.

As noted in my earlier review of "River's Edge" (see below)--Terri Blackstock's third installment of her "Cape Refuge" series--it seemed that she had reached her pinnacle.
But 'lo and behold' I stand corrected! Ms. Blackstock's final volume of this series, "Breaker's Reef," once again exceeds even her own fine work. Within the context of a strong Christian message, her ability to write extraordinary mysteries is as good as any secular author... and better than most!

"River's Edge," the third entry in the four-volume "Cape Refuge" series by Terri Blackstock, is yet another example that this unique author somehow continues to improve with each book. This is especially impressive considering that all of Ms. Blackstock's novels are outstanding. Her superb writing style; her creative plots of mystery, and compelling insight into human relations; her ability to integrate, so skillfully, her strong convictions in the Christian faith... all of these attributes, and more, make her works special. Very special. --RON HOWE (a.k.a. Toby Martin II)

5.0 out of 5 stars Mystery, February 15, 2007
By
This review is from: Breaker's Reef (Cape Refuge, No. 4) (Paperback)
This is the fourth book in the Cape Refuge mystery series and completes the story in a satisfactory and fulfilling way. Terri Blackstock is true to her readers, she doesn't "fool" any of us while at the same being able to slip in that quirk or surprise fact toward the ending that keeps the reader turning pages. The Cape Refuge characters are warm, smart and human!!! I have read all four of the Cape Refuge series and recommend them highly; they have a Christian slant that is light and does not preach or come on heavy-handed but is very today.

3.0 out of 5 stars A satisfying conclusion to a good mystery series, April 9, 2009
The fourth entry in Blackstock's Cape Refuge series finds a couple of murders, a new baby and a wedding occurring on the small island, all within a short span of time. Jonathan and Morgan are expecting (their infertility travails are documented in the third entry in the series); Cade and Blair are going to the chapel (theirs is the most realistic romance); and, of course, a mystery. There are a couple of notable plot turns that I didn't see coming and Blackstock explores the concept of what it means to be born again and to truly hate the sins one has committed through her character, Sheila Caruso (introduced in the first entry in the series).

Blackstock is a good novelist and I'll be starting her Newpointe 911 series shortly.
