Editorial Reviews

Universal Music Group has gone back to the original master tapes to deliver fully uncompressed, high-resolution versions of many of your favorite albums on Blu-ray Pure Audio Disc. Mastered at 24bit/96kHz, Blu-Ray Pure Audio Discs deliver the sound the artists originally heard in the studio when these classic albums were recorded. Recordings are transferred from the original master tapes and delivered in high-resolution 24-bit/96kHz audio. No compression is utilized, and the sound quality is vastly superior to MP3 or standard CD. Features three separate choices of audio file format for playback: PCM 2.0, Dolby True HD, or DTS-HD Master Audio (5.1 available where noted). Your preferred audio format is chosen either by pressing the 'Audio' button on your Blu-Ray remote or via your onscreen menu display.

There are mad fluctuations in ratings on this product. First, giving this product a low rating because of a lack of 5.1 surround sound is ridiculous. A 5.1 surround option should be considered a bonus feature of any SACD or Blu-ray disc. The point of purchasing a music format other than an mp3 or redbook cd in this digital age is to obtain a sound quality closer to the original master tapes of the studio recordings - period.

That being said, ratings that give this product high praise for sound quality are undeserving. Is the quality better than the redbook cd? Yes, BUT - and this is a big but; It is nowhere the quality it should be. The complex mid-range instrumentation Supertramp is known for is muddy, lacking presence and instrument definition. At times the music even seems compressed although the packaging insists that it is not.

What it does say is this:

"Audio is sourced from 24bit/96kHz master sources and full technical specifications are given on the rear of the box."

If you turn to the rear of the box, the only mention of quality is in the lower right corner which states:

"Minimum 24bit/96kHz audio material"

Sounds good doesn't it. Let's think about this for a minute. If I have a grungy, un-cared for original album (now about 35yrs old) and play it through one of the cheap mass-marketed "retro style" usb record players at best buy into a 24bit/96kHz A2D dac, I could stake the same claim on my recording - do you want to buy it?

This truly sounds outstanding. The clarity, detail, and the depth of the sound field is incredible.
It should go without saying that the better your sound system, the better overall listening experience you will have. Any recording is only as good as your sound system can reproduce.

I do not understand the negative comments. Many are from people who haven't even bought this.
Yes, it's stereo, got over it. And it states VERY clearly that the source is from the original master tapes, no compression used. Apparently some people can't read simple English.
Nowhere does it state that there is a surround mix. If you can't read plain English there's no one to blame but yourself.

If you want to hear another outstanding Blu-Ray (also on DVD-A) remastering, check out Steven Wilson's work on Close to the Edge by Yes. It's stunning.... and includes a multichannel mix.

3.0 out of 5 stars Breakfast in America December 21, 2013
The Blu Ray version at first I thought it sounded very good, better than the RBCD version. I bought the SHM-SACD version and it blew the Blu Ray version out with all the other version as just another version. If you can afford the SHM-SACD version of Breakfast in America, that the one to get, can't get any better in sound quality than SACD. The sound is like butter as perfect as you can get.

I have a hard time taking it out of the player.

3.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable ! NOT !!! January 14, 2014

I must apologise for originally giving this thing 5 stars and raving about it. After relistening several times I'm embarrassed cause I called it one of my better sounding discs' ' In truth , its way too loud to listen at low levels . It sounds pretty good when cranked though. I've just gotten back into analog , and that alone is making me more aware of just how good music can and should sound. I was excited at the prospect of reissuing some of my older albums into Blu ray but I agree with the masses,if you're gonna do it,please do it right.I understand there's a SACD out of this, has anyone heard it to compare. I'm considering preordering John Lennon's Imagine on Blu ray but I think I'll wait for someones review before dumping another 30 bucks.

1.0 out of 5 stars Only marginally better than CD still muddy and compressed February 10, 2014

My rating is based on the lack of effort on mixing and lack of true improvement. This technology is only limited by lazy releases done only to harvest money. The PCM tracks could sound fantastic. To those who are complaining about no multi channel I am really at loss. You dont even seem to care about the poor audio quality. You just want multi "who cares if it sounds bad". This recording was not done in multi and was not intended for multi. hey whatever works for ya.

I had forgotten how good this album was end to end. This version is probably the best sounding digital version out there.

If you understand that this is a stereo presentation, in the highest quality sound reproduction format available, and you like Supertramp, this is a winner. Crank it up, blow the dust off your woofers and feel what the artist(s), producer and engineers had in mind. The sound envelope is huge, the dynamic range expansive. It would have been fantastic to see a 5.1 mix included, as Supertramp's music is a perfect match for a surround experience. Extra's such as how the music was created, and the process of that undertaking would have been appreciated. If you want to hear what your stereo sound system will do however, this is a reference recording. Turn off the lights, grab a cold one, and crank this through your Blu-Ray. Pure sonic heaven.
