4.0 out of 5 stars Breakfast in Bed - Roby Kaye, January 13, 2010
This review is from: Breakfast in Bed (Mass Market Paperback)
Becca is a very talented artist that comes from a wealthy family. All she wants is to make a name for herself in the art community, without the help of her family name. She needs a place to stay for a few months while the brownstone she purchased with her brother, Mike and sister in-law, Annabelle is renovated. She walks into an apartment she is renting in the meantime to find Rich, in his naked glory, just getting out of the shower. Rich is Annabelle's brother, and Becca has definitely noticed his attractive appearance in the past. Rich has rented the apartment from his other sister Rosalie, so now they are both stuck and neither is willing to leave. Becca doesn't want the slob Rich to stay there, no matter how attractive he is.

Rich has just moved to to New York to become a professor of psychology at Columbia University. His mentor and dean encourages Rich to settle down his private life, after a very embarrassing fling with the dean's daughter at his previous college. His current girlfriend, Gina has just dumped him, realizing Rich is not relationship material. Wanting to prove to his new boss he has his life under control, he needs to convince Gina that he is capable of being mature. He strikes a deal with Becca, they can both stay in the apartment, and Becca can teach him to become a "Domestic God" and she will be allowed to stay. Becca only has three months until her new house is finished, and doesn't have the energy to look for another place at the moment so she takes him up on his deal He has two weeks to accomplish this before his dinner with the dean of his school. An attraction starts to develop as Becca teaches Rich the fine skills of ironing and laundry.

Breakfast in Bed is the first book I have read by Robin Kaye and I found it to be a very cute contemporary. At first I thought Rich being ignorant to washing the dishes, cooking and cleaning would be a bit hokey. I mean, he does have his doctorate, he is no dummy. However, his interactions with Becca, and her frustration with teaching him routine chores turned out to be quite funny. Rich is a very endearing character and when he messes up in the house, you just can't help but laugh. As Rich says,

"Your sandwich is ready. I even cut it in triangles like you asked."
"I'm impressed. It looks great."
"It does?"
"Yes." She picked up a piece and took a bite.
From the look on her face, he knew she changed her mind. Then she kind of gagged and put her hand in front of her lips while she pulled something from her mouth. Oh, man. He screwed up.
Becca held a piece of plastic between her fingers.
"Rich, you're supposed to unwrap the cheese before you cook it."
"Right."
"What happened to yours?"
"I ate it."
Becca is a very likable heroine, very independent with a quick temper. She grew up in a wealthy family, but refuses to let that wealth shape who she is. She is a talented artist, but is very wary of letting her family name boost her career. She likes to do everything on her own, which Rich soon finds out.

The passion between them, once they acknowledge they truly don't hate the other, is quite steamy. Very hot love scenes, including a mad dash home in the car with them unable to keep their hands off each other as they drive. My favorite kind of car ride!

I didn't love the scenario of Rich's boss telling him he preferred him to settle down with a woman and kind of hinting it is best for his career for him to do that. Rich is an intelligent person, and jumped to perform when his boss told him. It seemed a bit of a forced scenario. Also, by the end of the book, I wanted to give Becca a good shake for the way she treats Rich, but overall, I enjoyed both of these characters and I will definitely read Robin Kaye again.

Breakfast in Bed is fun, romantic and Rich will have you laughing at his attempt to become a Domestic God.

5.0 out of 5 stars What could be better than BREAKFAST IN BED?, August 19, 2010
This review is from: Breakfast in Bed (Mass Market Paperback)
Robin Kaye does it again... ROMEO, ROMEO inspired me to eat lots of Italian food and drool over hot mustang driving mechanic wannabes. TOO HOT TO HANDLE actually made me want to change doctors, but BREAKFAST IN BED has always been a favorite of mine! ;)

When Becca walks into her new apartment, she is shocked to find her best friend's brother has already taken up residence. She doesn't know what is more frustrating...her lack of a private apartment, or her unwelcome attraction to Annabelle's annoying brother! When Becca learns that Richie's girlfriend dumped him because of his lack of domestic skills, she is very amused...until he asks her to be the one to teach him these missing domestic skills so he can get the girlfriend back. Why would she waste her time teaching these skills for another woman to take advantage of his new domesticity? Just like a pet, once you train a man, he should be yours!

I thoroughly enjoyed BREAKFAST IN BED, and I had a very hard time putting it down. It was hilarious (I especially loved it when Richie toasted all of Becca's underwear in the dryer), it was sexy, and it was believable. Just my type of novel! I am anxiously awaiting Robin's next installment, YOURS FOR THE TAKING.

4.0 out of 5 stars Breakfast in Bed, January 12, 2010
This review is from: Breakfast in Bed (Mass Market Paperback)
Becca and Rich are in quite the predicament. It seems they will have to share the same living quarters for a while. Rich thinks that it might be the perfect setting - since he asks Becca to help him become more of a "relationship material" type of man. He solicits her help in learning to cook, clean, laundry - all in the hopes of getting his ex girlfriend back. Now Becca is more than happy to help - since she sees this as a way of speeding Rich's departure from the apartment they are sharing. But soon she realizes that this Domestic God might be something she doesn't want to give up but instead wants to keep for herself... now it's just a matter of convincing him that she's the only girl he needs to impress.

Just thinking of a man trying to domesticate himself in order to win a girl's heart - brings a big smile to my face. Rich was hilarious with his zany antics. My God, the man was a disaster. Although he comes off as a womanizer and even arrogant at first, he slowly but surely works his way into your heart. Becca wasn't so high on my list. She was easier to like in the beginning of the book but she just went downhill from there for me. I can understand that a girl needs to set-up barriers to protect her delicate heart, and in Becca's case, she just couldn't trust a man to love her without loving her money more. But there was a point where I just wanted to grab a hold of her and tell her to just get over it. She was a tad frustrating for me. Nonetheless, she redeemed herself towards the end of the story making this sweet, contemporary romance, an enjoyable one. I loved all the supporting characters as well - Rich's Aunt Rose, the upstairs gay neighbors and even Tripod, the three legged cat. Ms. Kaye's writing was simple and she made her characters realistic and most of them were very endearing. None were perfect, which made them even more loveable in my eyes.

In the end, this was a fun read where you don't have to put too much thought into it and just submerge yourself in the good feeling of it all. It was the first in the series that I've read, so I definitely want to get my hands on the other two that came before it.
