Book Description

May 1, 2005
Ever since the first bowl was poured more than a century ago, people the world over have craved cereal. The Breakfast Cereal Gourmet celebrates this morning meal pop culture icon, serving up over 30 original recipes that utilize the likes of Kix, Trix, Froot Loops, Frosted Flakes, Chex, and Cheerios as a primary ingredient. The 128 full-color pages are filled with images of vintage packaging and original advertising, mixed with little-known cereal facts, figures, anecdotes, and history--all packaged in a format to look like a cereal box. But at its core are the recipes. And Cap'n Crunch Crab Cakes, Lucky Charmed Utah Lamb, Shredded Shrimp (with Pineapple Mango Salsa), Mocha-Cocoa Towers, and Cinnamon Toast Ice Cream are among the delicious five-star offerings (many from noted chefs such as Rick Bayless, Gale Gand, and Sherry Yard), guaranteed to get even the most jaded foodie to think outside the box.

5.0 out of 5 stars While visions of Cap'n Crunch commercials danced in our heads ..., January 13, 2006

This review is from: The Breakfast Cereal Gourmet (Hardcover)
Cereal. It's not just comfort food or for breakfast anymore. The "Breakfast of Champions" goes 24/7 with these recipes. But that's only part of the fun here. Also in the mix are fun facts: did you know that the average person consumes about 10 pounds - 160 bowls of cereal per year? or that "Breakfast cereals rank third in the list of grocery store items on which Americans spend their money, behind only carbonated beverages and milk - and ahead of bread, hamburger, and cigarettes?" That "the US cereal industry uses in excess of 800 million pounds of sugar per year, enough to coat every person with more than 3 pounds of sugar?" Or that, if you stick a magnet in any "iron-fortified" cereal, black fuzzy iron will stick to it? The physics of the famous snap, crackle, pop? Accompanying all these mind blowing, teeth-decaying facts are grand, simply grand, photos of cereal boxes and commercials from those Saturday Baby Boomer mornings in front of the TV. And, oh yeah, recipes for Cap'n Crunch crabcakes, nutty Apple (Jack-ed) Bleu Cheese Terrine, Trix lemon yellow and orange orange meringue pie in a glass, and much much more.

Mikey and I like it. We really, really like it!

I bought this book for my boyfriend who is a writer and really enjoys the 1940's-1980's. There is some great stuff in here, not just images but the back stories on the products and some neat trivia stuff. I recommend it!
