Editorial Reviews

Lee Coombs delivers his eagerly anticipated debut artist album Breakfast of Champions and tears through a torrid throng of musical genres, crashing through every box on his way.

Seb Fontaine and Pete Tong noted Coombs as the ‘man to watch’ after his Future Sound of Retro album was released on Finger Lickin’ in June 2001. Remixes including Quivver and Sister Bliss set the stage for success to follow. Soon his talents were being called upon to put his twist on everyone from New Order to Lamb to Moby.

For this album, Lee has collaborated with some of the finest producers around including Dylan Rhymes, Christian J, Andy Gardner (Plump DJs) and Jem Panufnik (Soul Of Man). Breakfast Of Champions captures the carefree sunshine of Ibiza’s Space terrace towards dark ebbing klaxon horns and sleazy tribal echoes with "Black Elk Speaks". The album’s eponymous track takes on grimy acid house that would send the freaks down at DC10 running for cover before the soothing vocals and glinting guitar twangs of Coombs’ remix of New Order’s "Crystal" lends sanctuary to the sinister breaks of "Dubhead" and the Axel F-styled electro of "Would Be True".

4.0 out of 5 stars Jack of all stylees, January 16, 2005
This review is from: Breakfast of Champions (Audio CD)
I got a few 12inch samplers of this from fingerlickin records and they've been going down a storm in my sets.

'Dubhead' is proper chunky progressive house. 'Obssetional Rhythm' with Andy from the Plump's is a corker, too.
It's funny how a guy who uses really old acid house 303's and samples can also be one of the most innovative cats on the breaks/house music scene.

It's not quite as ground breaking as 'Future Sound Of Retro,' but then I'm still getting into a lot of the sound. He's moving on, which can only be a good thing, as long as this is the standard he mantains!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Dance CD, August 14, 2010

I'm not going into a long review but I will tell you that if you like a good beat but are sick of repeatition and riffs that go nowhere, this CD is for you. I often hear a track or two on Pandora, try to purchase it on iTunes but end up having to purchase the entire CD just to get the 1 track. More often than not, its the only track on the entire CD that I like. This CD on the other hand has 1 or 2 tracks that are not my favorites but the rest are great! I was very pleasantly surprised and find myself listening to it frequently. It is also going into my Burning Man play list so if you're a Burner out on the playa and you see an art car that looks like a giant gold Buddha chances are you'll hear a few of these tracks come thumping at you.

Good CD. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality Music with Style, November 11, 2005
This review is from: Breakfast of Champions (Audio CD)
This CD has some phat beats and it will get you moving. It is bass heavy (in a good way) as it has a lot of thump to it. Good listening if you have a good sound system with a powerful subwoofer. The tracks are good one after another and you can listen to this CD straight through. If you try to dance to the whole CD straight through, you might not make it though (unless you're extremely physical fit). The heavy beats motivate you to move in big and strong movements and in about 3-4 songs, I'd say you are suffienciently worked out and satisfied. Then you can just take a seat and nod your head to it. Pretty interesting.
