Waggily Tale ?,
By MD Steven "Steven (PVM) in Asheville" (Asheville, NC USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Breakfast on Pluto { Original Soundtrack } (Audio CD)
I saw this film last week and flipped at the old hits from the period of the film. In every scene you get some golden shining gem.
Unfortunately they are not all included in the soundtrack. The film takes place in Ireland and briefly, London, during the early to mid 70s You get schmaltzy American hits like Bobby Goldsboro's 'Honey'...which recurs throughout the film and Dusty Springfield's 'Windmills of your Mind'!. Both hits from the 60's but still prevalent on the radio both here and I gather over seas where the film takes place...at the time. Gavin Friday who plays Billy Rock (Glam Rocker Icon) in the film, was a founding member of the Virgin Prunes in the late 70's. He contributes a cover of Lee Hazelwood's 'Sand' on a duet with Cillian Murphy (the star)...playing the role of Nancy Sinatra on stage in the film...quite well done really. T-Rex's 'Children of the Revolution' appearance in a club scene in London is letter perfect on the soundtrack, and truly, it wouldn't be complete without it. I had never heard the title track before by Don Partridge before seeing the film. It's a great little song of intergalactic tripping travel which suits 'Kitten's'(the star) tale to a tea. Duke Ellington's 'Caravan' covered by Santo & Johnny is well hidden in the film but great to see that they kept it as a choice for the 13 tracks on the soundtrack. I guess they had to keep the Patti Page tune as it is in a pretty funny scene...but that's the only one I would have dumped in the interest of a cohesive album.... Nilsson gets two tracks : 'Me and my Arrow' from the classic album 'The Point' ( another story about a different boy named Oblio )- and from Son of Schmilsson we get the hilarious 'You're Breaking My Heart' which most of us didn't or won't get to hear on the radio because of the lovely little line "You're breaking My Heart, You're Tearing it Apart, so F&$@ You"...it's really a sing a long, an anthem if you will. Based on seeing the film only, and I recommend you do if you like to laugh and have an open mind for the subject matter, I give the soundtrack 5 stars. I just wish they went the distance and included everything used in the film. It's often the case for music buffs that the more obscure stuff gets left out. Check it out in it's full context, see the film. It's jaw dropping.

Anna Jordan Strings Together a Strand of Stars,
By Grady Harp (Los Angeles, CA United States) - See all my reviews (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE) (TOP 50 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Breakfast on Pluto { Original Soundtrack } (Audio CD)
Anna Jordan is the one to whom this outstanding musical score for the delightful BREAKFAST ON PLUTO film, a story about a young Patrick 'Kitten' Jordan who lives his misunderstood life in the 1970s as though he were out somewhere in the cosmos, is attributed. Actually Jordan contributes some fine original music to the flow of the film, but her biggest contribution is her selection of oldies but goodies from the 60s and 70s that capture the aura of Neil Jordan's fine and sensitive adaptation of the Patrick McCabe novel.
For those of us who were a part of that musical period this recording will serve as a collection of many favorites placed in a sequence that is endearing. The Rubettes version of 'Sugar Baby Love' floats along with Joe Dolan's 'You?re Such a Good Looking Woman' and Harry Nilsson's 'You're Breakin' My Heart' and 'Me and My Arrow', while Patti Page croons 'Doggie in the Window', Dusty Springfield offers 'The Windmills of your Mind', and Morris Alberts gives us 'Feelings'. The CD is well recorded and the positioning of the songs is excellent for easy and memorable listening. Not being one who usually goes for soundtracks of films (with a few notable exceptions), this recording is full of songs that bring back many good memories and they are not tampered with to try to update them. A good buy, this. Grady Harp, April 06

The good songs are missing,
By
This review is from: Breakfast on Pluto { Original Soundtrack } (Audio CD)
The soundtrack to this movie was ecclectic and truly great. The movie mixed Gavin Friday rockers with Van Morrison's Madam George with The Buffalo Springfield's For What It's Worth and added several really great songs by virtual unknowns. Unfortunately, whoever selected the songs for this CD thought commonplace marginal songs like Patti Page's How much is that doggie in the window or Bobby Goldsboro's Honey was the key to capturing the essense of this movie. It boggles the mind. There are a few good songs on the CD like Sugar Baby Love,Children of the Revlolution and a Gavin Friday or two song but It's unfortunate that you can't get all of the really good songs from this movie and have to settle for watching the movie so that you can hear snippits of the best songs in the movie....but I'd rather do that than listen to dribble like Morris Alberts Wedding fare, Feelings. Save Your Money!

I adored the movie, and the music was an integral part of that enjoyment. I was afraid there would be no soundtrack and was ecstatic when it became available. Got the CD yesterday and haven't stopped playing it. Absolutely delightful. Many of the songs utterly infectious. Can hardly rate highly enough.

After hours of research on Amazon, it seems nearly all of the missing tracks are available via MP3.
Like other reviewers, I think "Feelings" should perhaps have been left off the CD in favor of better tracks. But, better yet, it would be nice to simply have the missing tracks. So I will list the better titles first, then the remaining music for completists out there: Me & Mrs Jones - Billy Paul The Moonbeam Song - Harry Nilsson Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep - Middle of the Road For What It's Worth - Buffalo Springfield Love is a Many-Splendored Thing - Jerry Vale Rock Your Baby - George McCrae In the Rain - The Dramatics Fly Robin Fly - Silver Convention For The Good Times - Kris Kristofferson Cyprus Avenue - Van Morrison The above tracks better fit the general feel of the collective of the songs, but for those who "want it all" here are additional items that played in the movie, but are perhaps less desirable... Fu** the British Army - Paddy's Irish Clan Everyday - Slade Freelance Fiend - Leafhound Tell Me What You Want - Jimmy Ruffin No More White Horses - T2 (Rare track!) Madame George - Van Morrison DreamWorld - Don Downing Makes You Blind - The Glitter Band There is also one classical piece from the fire scene: Handel's Zadok the Priest - Huddersfield Choral Society This is an excellent choral group - you may wish to explore their work further. Ghost Riders in the Sky - (Instrumental Production) This doesn't seem to be directly replaceable, but the Ventures do a nice instrumental cover of this song, and a C&W group called "Riders in the Sky" do some fine harmony in their vocal version of this song. These remaining titles are likely contained within material that appeared on the TV that Patrick overheard: Les Girls (Film Score) - Cole Porter Why Am I So Gone (About That Girl) - Cole Porter The Quiet Man/The Way/The Race - Dublin Screen Orchestra Isle of Inisfree - Dublin Screen Orchestra This track was played to support a magic act scene: Smoke Gets in Your Eyes - Billy Livesey (Really cheesy organ bit and not available as an MP3, thankfully!) The Platters have the best known STANDARD version of this tune. You will sometimes have to search for a title by name only, other times the artist name as well. I have yet to fully understand the mysterious way Amazon's search engine works. The only titles I have not tracked down are the snippets from old soundtracks as overheard on Patrick's TV. Otherwise nearly ALL the music CAN be found via MP3, and some on CD. Happy Hunting!

I had enjoyed this slightly odd movie, and the music is just so much fun, many of the tracks I have uploaded into my ipod for workout music, they are upbeat and keep you going. The track sung with Cillian Murphy..was a huge incentive to buy =)

Great for us baby-boomers. But surely the music must appeal to all age groups- and it's from a delightful film.

A Four Star 'Breakfast',
This review is from: Breakfast on Pluto { Original Soundtrack } (Audio CD)
Although some of the songs on this soundtrack aren't nearly as good as the others, it's well worth it for the ones that stand out. This is not your typical soundtrack with popular songs that everyone will know - in fact, the best ones are those that I hadn't heard before.
Highlights - 'Sugar Baby Love' 'Good Looking Woman' 'Breakfast on Pluto' 'Sand' 'Children of the Revolution' and 'Wig Wam Bam' This is definitely a great soundtrack as far as soundtracks go and worth more than what it costs in dollars.
