Editorial Reviews

Review

Not a comprehensive, theory-heavy text, this book instead focuses on innovative classroom activities designed to stimulate students in discussion of human issues and to show students the relevance of the past. Activities include brief writing assignments to be done in class and shared with the group, map assignments, pair and group discussion, skits, and research activities using library and the Internet. Appendices offer notes on map resources, a list of recommended music by time period, and a description of useful CD-ROMs and Web sites. Pahl is professor and coordinator of the social sciences program at California State University-Fullerton. (Reference and Research Book News)

This book is not what it claims to be. It is primarily a reader for teachers who don't know anything about the content. The bulk of the text is dedicated to summarizing the interesting bits of relevant history. Appended to the readings are short sections of standard project suggestions that can be found in any teacher's edition of a textbook e.g. write a journal as though you were one of the persons present at x, y, z. Debate whether or not x, y, z is moral. Create an artwork piece in the style of x, y, z. No rubrics are included to aid on prep time. No lessons are provided. No suggestions for pacing or handouts... In fact, nothing in the book reduces prep time unless you don't know your subject. Then, it does, indeed, give condensed, time-saving background reading on topics in world history. But, in every other way, the entire implementation of the "breaking away" still rests at the door of the teacher. Draw your own conclusions.

If you teach high school World History, you need this book! It is full of all sorts of great teaching and content ideas. It has writing activites, map activities, group activities and project ideas. There are research ideas and projects for your advanced students as well. I have used these in both my on-level and advanced classes. It has some great activity and media ideas as well. I have told everyone in my department about it and our campus has ordered a set of this series for our World History teachers. Our American history teachers then ordered the American set for themselves and have gotten some great ideas too. I cannot speak too highly about this book!
