5.0 out of 5 stars A review of the Blu-ray set, not the show. November 26, 2013
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
This is a review of the Blu-ray set, not the show. If you are considering buying this, you probably already know how awesome it is (very), and if you don't, there are many reviews that will tell you all you need to know. I haven't looked at the special features, and don't plan to until I finish the final season, so there isn't really much I can say about that. This is a review of what you physically get in the box. Too many times I have purchased box sets and collectors editions, things that are meant to be nice and last, only to encounter peeling cardboard, cheap materials and silly designs. Not here.

The barrel is about a foot tall and six inches across, making it a pretty significant object as far as movie cases go. It has enough presence that you could display it on it's own, but fortunately it's not too imposing that it forces you to. The two "ribs" on the barrel have a flat spot by the hinges to allow to the door to open, and it and the hinges double as a kind of foot that allows you to turn it on it's side, and put it on the shelf with your other movies with the BrBa logo facing out. Slick little piece of design right there. When on it's side its about an inch shorter than a regular Blu-ray case.

The first thing you'll notice when you pick it up is that it's heavy, which is nice, heavy things have a feeling of quality that light things just don't. It's made of high quality matt plastic, except for the lid, which is glossy. Everything that makes it look like a case is very discreet, the door opens with a little notch that is just big enough that you don't actually need to use a fingernail, but still very small, as are the hinges. Unless you look closely, it really does look like a little barrel, not a case that looks like a little barrel.

*If you're already familiar with Breaking Bad and just want a review of this box set itself, scroll to the EDIT*

To quote the lead actor Bryan Cranston, "the term 'breaking bad' is a southern colloquialism and it means when someone who has taken a turn off the path of the straight and narrow, when they've gone wrong. And that could be for that day or for a lifetime." This show- well actually to call it a show would be a great understatement, I should say this masterpiece, follows the story of Walter White, and how he breaks bad. Walt is a high school chemistry teacher, and first portrayed as kind of a loser. He's emasculated by his family, disrespected by his students, and bullied by his boss. Forced to work two jobs to take care of his pregnant wife and disabled son, Walt soon finds out that he has terminal lung cancer, with only a few months to live. In order to save money for his family to live off of after he's dead, Walt teams up with his former student, Jesse Pinkman, to cook crystal meth.

What follows is a roller coaster ride to Hell. Watching Walt's transformation into his drug lord alter ego, Heisenberg, is one of the most masterfully executed character arcs in television history. Through a series of subtle, and sometimes not so subtle, shifts, we see this previously sympathetic character become something mosnterous. Vince Gilligan has etched his mark forever in entertainment history with this series. When most people want to show a character turn dark, they tend to rush things, and show drastic changes in a short amount of time, sometimes only a season or two. Not here. It's piece by piece, that Walter White tears off the mask of the harmless family man, to reveal the beast lurking behind a visage of meek compliance.

"Breaking Bad" is now over... but it will live on in the hearts and minds of fans. Fortunately, it will also live on in the blu-ray format - this Complete Series collection is a must own for fans of the show. I was excited and satisfied by the series finale, but I'm also sad realizing that it's all over. If you've always watched the show, or if you've just found it recently (I discovered the show on DVD before getting hooked in Summer 2011), you know how great the show is. If you've never seen "Breaking Bad", then I encourage you to give it a chance. Rarely has a show had this much universal acclaim (a 9.4 on IMDb, a 99/100 on Metacritic, 3 Emmy wins for Drama Actor and 4 Nominations for Best Drama Series, etc).

Is the barrel set censored?
Haven't watched them yet (just got barrel today), but they were uncensored on NetFlix. Additionally, during one of the Breaking Bad Insider podcasts, Vince G. said that they are uncensored when you buy them.

EDIT: Just looked in the booklet/guide that comes with the set, and it indicates not... Read More

What similar tv series do you reccommend?
The Shield follows themes seen in Breaking Bad. Consequences and the impact f a man's decisions. Also the protagonist is bald.

How many were made?
It is a limited edition, so unless they decide to do a second run of the barrel, it is unlikely that stores will get more in if they are sold out. Even the official Breaking Bad store is sold out, so you are better off checking out your local box stores to see if there are any left at a... Read More
