Book Description

Breaking the Chain began with Allyson Reedy wanting to eat better tasting, more adventurous food. After watching friends, family and strangers eat unsatisfactory meal after meal at chain restaurants and get fatter as a result, she wondered how we could break this chain of mediocrity, obesity and commercialism. So in 2009, Allyson Reedy stopped eating meals, snacks, and goodies from the kinds of restaurants that line America’s streets and dominate our stomachs. This food memoir chronicles her year-long experience as she sought out local alternatives to the fast food we’ve come to rely upon.

Breaking the Chain is Fast Food Nation (Eric Schlosser) told from Carrie Bradshaw’sthe point of view (if she loved manicotti as much as Manolos). Allyson shares the good and bad effects of her experiment, including passing up of her food rituals like an office breakfasts of bagels and donuts, her break from social customs, the inconvenience on friends, support for her neighbors and local food community, the discovery of new favorite foods, saving money, and ultimately, weight loss.

5.0 out of 5 stars I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book! October 8, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'm passionate about good food and eating well, so Allyson Reedy's adventures in avoiding chain restaurants seemed like it would be right up my literary alley. And I was right; the book definitely did not disappoint. Not only am I inspired to always try my hardest to seek out the best of the culinary world (be it an upscale eatery or, more often, those independently owned hole-in-the-wall establishments), her writing had me laughing out loud throughout the book. Breaking the Chain is well worth your time; it's an enjoyable read with a lot of heart as well as humor. Wonderful first book - I sure hope she'll be writing many more to come!

4.0 out of 5 stars engaging June 18, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'd love to give this 5 stars as it was engaging and entertaining, but the last 20% or so of the book just lost me. I it felt like all soapbox/ rant, and and just repetitive.. I do believe in the idea of eating local and primarily do. I'd recommend this book to anyone who has enjoys knowing more about where their food comes to from.

5.0 out of 5 stars Author's passion for good food is contagious! November 8, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Allyson Reedy's adventures with food are delicious, funny and inspiring. Since reading Breaking the Chain I have joined her in eating only (well almost only) at locally owned restaurants and have enjoyed delicious meals. When Allyson describes a meal, I feel like I can taste it too! Learn the tricks to assuring that a restaurant is truly not a chain and reap the rewards of truly dining local! Bon Appetit!

More About the Author

I really like to eat. In fact, if faced with Armageddon and given the chance to relive any day of my life, I would relive the one in which I ate the most. Occasionally I write about my food, my life and how the two intertwine about three times a day. Or four. Five, depending on the day.
