5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for ANY type of compulsive overeater, January 22, 2000
By A Customer
As a young woman of a normal, healthy weight who exercises regularly, most people wouldn't have believed I ever ate compulsively. But I did, and hated myself for it. Roth's book has hit me in the right spot; somewhere in the middle of my brain was the place she reached that I never could (neither could my therapist!). After reading the first few chapters just this week, I am already more in control, more thoughtful of myself and what I need, and more relaxed. This book is a genuine help for anyone who overeats and experiences self-loathing, whether they are overweight or not.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!!!!!, July 27, 1999
By A Customer
I read the first print of this book 12 years ago and it changed my life forever!! I have truly broken free from the hold that food, weight phobias, dieting, anorexia and bulimia had on me for over 15 years. I have been free for 12 years now and am forever grateful to Geneen for her bravery to dare to eat only when she was hungry and whatever she really wanted. This book is a must read for women who suffer hatred for themselves and their bodies. Geneen helped me learn to trust myself and therefore love myself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breaking Free from Compulsive Eating, April 21, 2001

This book is truly a gift from the gods.....at 31yrs old, I have tried EVERY diet known to man. In edition to this, I have swallowed numerous speed based diet pills to curb my appetite, taken pills that are supposed to get rid of fat from food (that made me virtually incontinent), taken chemicals to force myself to throw up after binges and taken laxatives, that on occasion caused me to have 'accidents' in most unfortunate places.

If you, like me; have declined social invitation because you did not want to eat, refused to go out with friends because you 'felt fat', or lain awake at night with insomnia as you are worried because tomorrow is 'weigh day' - then this book is for you.

Geneen understands EXACTLY what we have been going through and explains in an empathetic and compassionate fashion how you can stop judging yourself and get off the diet bandwagon. Throw all your diet books and scales away, feed your 'diet' food to your dog and start nurturing your body and understanding when you are hungry, what your body wants you to consume and when you have had enough. Am I 'cured'? It's an ongoing process, but one that at least I have taken the first few steps toward.
