When I received this book from Amazon, I was surprised to see its tiny dimensions and sparse pages. I failed to check the product details which lists this book as only containing a short, 96 pages. Trying to place my preconceived notions aside about such a compact book, I read Mintle's pages and was delighted to find that quality DOES outweigh quantity.
Self worth is a problem that holds countless in bondage. So many self-help books attempt to aid an individual by encouraging the reader to fall in love with themselves and to praise oneself daily. In the end, such humanistic books generally have us so utterly focused with ourselves that we become self-centered and idolaters of our own self. With such a selfish outlook, it becomes impossible to worship a God when we have already replaced him with ourselves. This book (thankfully) dispels this common philosophy. Instead, it focuses on building the truth (God's Word) within us. Many times, negative self-image is rooted in the deceptive lies we have begun to believe: uttered by our parents as they nurtured us, tauntings received on the play ground, and harsh words we have heard from even spouses. This book strips the power of those words and bluntly calls them what they are: lies. It then gives a foundation of what the truth is and how we can practically change our negative thoughts.
I am no longer upset with the size of the book. Through its profound truth spoken words and helpful exercises in shifting from "bad tapes" to "good tapes," this book has transformed my thought pattern and my view of myself.
Dr. Linda Mintle tackles the issue of negative self-image with combined psychological expertise and practical spiritual insights. She sites several examples of real case studies and life stories, which the reader can easily identify with. It's a quick & easy read, that really gets to the meat of the issue and leaves the reader with tools for overcoming a negative view of self.
