My mum & dad listen to this album in their Vauxhall Astra on their way to the supermarket. We sing along to it at 5 in the morning on upside down guitars. On "The Sweetness Lies Within", I thought "Treasure time that was spent with me" was "Chocolate time that was spent with me." But that's besides the point. Smithsian, good. Cheers you up. Romantic and true.

Think of the whiny rock of the wedding present mixed with over the top sentimentalilty of belle and sebastian (er... perhaps not quite accurate, for at least belle and sebastian have a more credible intellectual edge). Hefner is, at its best, ednearing and honest. At their worst, they are whiny and repetitve. But for the most part, Darren Haymen seems to have truly been wronged in romance-- enough to fill two full length records. This is the better of the two, perhaps only because it is slightly less polished then their latter effort, the fidelity wars. I'm a huge fan of this album, and the band for that matter, but I realize that this is not a 5 star offering. The music is enjoyable. The singing is heartfelt. This album is best described as a love story, told by a teenage boy. Included is embarrassment, innocence, melodrama, and truth.

If you like a little rawk in your indie rawk then this album is for you. If you like a slower feel to your music then this album is for you. Basically, if you have a pulse then this album is for you. I "discovered" Hefner while working on a film in London for eight months. After seeing them open for Elliot Smith and Sebadoh I became a FAN. I bought this album the very next day and there hasn't been a week gone by that I haven't played it. I get excited about so few bands anymore, but Hefner really has that rare ability to sound familiar and different at the same time. This is a GREAT album and anyone who tells you otherwise is a jaded indie rock hasbeen with little or no soul. Pretty, eloquent, distorted and unsettling, Breaking God's Heart is the best record from the UK since I don't know when!

While Breaking God's Heart is not without some merit, it is a shadow of the band's exciting and innovative first two singles issued on the little-known BoogleWonderland label. Clearly Hayman has been corrupted by the cancer of materialism and, as he suggests, is more interested in buying a house than making music with real integrity.

Hefner is a great band that captures moments of despair and odd passion as shambolic yet precise pop tunes. This CD constantly fills my rainy days with strumming. I hope they tour in America soon.

This is simply a bloody good record. As a lot of people claim, they have a slight resemblance to Belle & Sebastian, which is a good thing, but they really have developed their own unique sound. It's brilliant.

Hefner is really awesome. If you listen "Love will destroy us in the end" you may find the most sensitive, yet funny, song of the album and it's quite surprising that a band can do that without using epic arrangements with horns and all that stuff. I recommend this album because no one has this one and i'd love to talk about it with anyone.

Darren Hayman's vocals are amazing and the lyrics are beautiful

Hey Darren ! Are you sure you never heard "Lee Remick" by the Go-Betweens before you wrote "Lee Remick" ? No ... look me in the eyes and deny it ... It's really nothing to be ashamed of you know , you could do a lot worse. PS. "Hello kitten" made me laugh. Keep up the good work. Very refreshing stuff.
