Editorial Reviews

Contra Security is not your typical security firm. They have extreme, questionable methods to get clients, including breaking into other companies’ security systems to show their own firm’s worth. Led by the peculiar Oz (Christian Slater, True Romance), Contra hires a crackerjack computer hacker (Bret Harrison, TV’s “Reaper”) and sells out to a global conglomerate overseen by Veronica (Megan Mullally, TV’s “Will & Grace”). While Oz and Veronica butt heads over business, Team Contra continues to find new and ingenious ways to overcome security systems without disrupting the bottom line in the Complete Series of this quirky comedy. Newly remastered.

Season One was entertaining and different. Bret Harrison always seems to end up in entertaining TV series (Reaper, The Loop) that end too soon. Unfortunately cast changes in Season Two turned this show into an absolute mess. Can't stand Megan Mullaly or the blonde British chick, and to make things worse, more on air time for them meant less time for Harrison and Christian Slater, the true stars of this show. I'd recommend you watch the Season One episodes and stop when you're done, Season Two is a complete waste of time.

BREAKING IN is a hilarious and savvy FOX comedy that was overlooked by both audiences and critics. It was taken off the air WAY too quickly, and by the middle of season two, was fast becoming one of the funniest and most irreverent comedies on network TV.

The show had it all: smart writing, memorable characters like Cash, the quick witted and geeky gadget guy, Melanie -- the beautiful, intelligent and badass lock picking girl and lovable schmucks like Dutch. There's a lot of hilarious guest stars, too. And endless pop culture references, audience winks and, of course, Chrisitan freakin' Slater. And it's that vintage sly, witty Slater we love from his earlier movies.

Season Two took a bit of a creative turn, but once the writers figured out how to best use Megan Mullally, the new office dynamic at Contra Security was catchy and funny. Once it finds it's footing, the second half of season two has some of the coolest movie homages in recent TV comedy -- Back to the Future, Indiana Jones, Heathers, a ton of great stuff. And the series finale is a phenomenal send off of Star Wars -- a cornerstone for Breaking In since day one.

For fans of Community, Chuck, Workaholics, Star Wars, Goonies, John Hughes movies, Internet memes and way, way more. Breaking In deserves to be watched and rediscovered by fans on DVD for years to come, á la Arrested Development. A spontaneous and hilarious gem from Adam F. Goldberg.

This is one of the single best shows ever made that deals with geek culture. Brett Harrison is fantastic. Christian Slater is amazing and the dude that plays Cash (Alphonso McAuley) is incredibly funny and I'll watch anything he's in from this point on. Michael Rosenbaum and Trevor Moore made the first season utterly hysterical and it was nice to see Lance Krall in the 2nd season. The Goonies finale in the first season was one of my favorites and the Star Wars series finale was EPIC! Definitely buy this!!!!!

I've been wanting season 2 of breaking in for a long time and finally decided to order this. All the episodes are there, and it's good quality, but I learned right away when I tried to play all episodes that they aren't even in order. Really? Is it that hard to put the episodes in order? I went to IMDB and used the episode list to watch the episodes in order on the dvd. It's not the end of the world, but good grief, put a little effort into it.

This series, for whatever reason, never developed a following. I can't understand why. It is a lighthearted look at modern day security. That's not what makes it fun though. In its heart is a child of the 80's. Any and every person who lived through or has gone back and enjoyed that time period will enjoy the references and frequent jokes about then. If you ever wondered about going to comic-con there is something here for you. The first season has guest star after guest star, some playing themselves others playing a character. Its just fun. Beyond that I am watching some of the episodes with my 3 year old and she loves watching the antics on the screen even though she doesn't fully understand it all. This is a fun lighthearted series and deserves your time.

I was charmed and delighted by Breaking In. The writing is hilarious, clever, both original and referential, and the acting elevates it far beyond the level of your basic sitcom. Christian Slater's performance as the cunning genius at the top is sly and fun. Michael Rosenbaum plays a rarity as Dutch--the truly lovable doofus; this is the sort of character that in lesser hands might be ridiculous or annoying, but Rosenbaum makes him the highlight of every episode he appears in. Odette Annable is a phenomenally beautiful woman with wonderful presence--you can't help but like her from the start, and her performance is funny, smart, and likable. Alphonso McAuley is a delight as Cash, stealing scenes right and left (often trading them back and forth with Dutch). And Bret Harrison is the glue that holds the center together, at times the unsung straight man hero of the jokes, always pure gold in his performance.

Unfortunately, FOX decided to shoehorn in a new female lead season two (presumably they'd put Megan Mulally under contract and had to find something to do with her). The show becomes depressingly unwatchable, less than a shadow of its former self. Don't put yourself through watching those episodes; it will only make you sad. But do buy the set (or at least the first season on Video-on-Demand), because you will not find a funnier, more memorable, more quotable show than the freshman year of Breaking In.
