Book Description

May 26, 1999
When Casey Willardson is assigned to tutor Thomas Fairbarin -- also known as Baby -- she approaches her task with great trepidation.Baby is a member of the Clan, a mysterious group of young men who do not talk to outsiders or participate in school. Baby and Casey's relationship is awkward at first, but soon they turn to each other. As the Clan drifts from it's mooring, Baby grows distant from his brother and the rest of the group that he considers family. As as Casey takes a step away from her own secure world, everything she counted on is turned upside down.

Kristen D. Randle has written a story that is absorbing and unusal, insightful and outspoken, about two teenagers whose lives become intertwined -- and a collision that forces them to make difficult choices.

Amazon.com Review

The Clan, as the clique is called, is a highly nontraditional gang. While they disavow participation in school, these enigmatic boys don't believe in drugs or violence, and are advocates of self-education--older members tutor younger apprentices in everything from car mechanics to Latin. But the comfort and acceptance of the Clan is no longer enough for Thomas, or "Baby," as he is known by his family. Baby wants to be more than just a mechanic like his domineering older brother, so he breaks rank from his peers and takes an aptitude test at school. Once the administrators are aware of Baby's intelligence, the principal pairs him with honor student Casey Willardson to help him catch up in the gifted program. As the two work together--dark, handsome rebel and beautiful, popular schoolgirl--the preconceptions and misunderstandings they have about each other are slowly stripped away. They quickly become close and learn to trust and even love each other. But Baby and Casey discover that even though they don't care about superficial differences, their friends do. Their relationship provokes a showdown between the Clan and the varsity football team that promises to end in disaster.

In a tale reminiscent in many ways of The Outsiders, West Side Story, and, most obviously, Romeo and Juliet, Kristen D. Randle nevertheless gives new life to an old story line with her detailed description of the Clan's structure and how the group comes into conflict with the regimented social hierarchy of high school. Readers will appreciate the realism and intelligence of this novel, and may also learn a lesson in peer pressure and independent thinking. (Ages 12 and older) --Jennifer Hubert

From Publishers Weekly

For 12 years, the black-clad members of "the Clan" have slunk through school, driving teachers crazy by calmly refusing to work or to speak to anyone. But one day Thomas, aka "Baby" to his Clan fellows, clandestinely takes a placement test and is identified as gifted. Over her parents' objections, Casey, a good student friendly with the jock/cheerleader set, responds to the guidance counselor's request for her help and becomes Baby's after-school tutor. At first deeply mistrustful of each other, Baby and Casey gradually find a common bond and, unsurprisingly, a powerful mutual attraction. Their relationship sets in motion a chain of events that causes each of them to reexamine who they are, where they stand in their social milieus and how they will respond to their peers' expectations. The characterizations and group dynamics are compelling, the romance believable and the plot gripping as events come to a violent crescendo. Randle (The Only Alien on the Planet) is adept at conveying ingrained prejudices as well as the frustration and alienation that lead some youths to forsake the "straight" world for a more friendly and accepting one of their own making. A vivid, resonant contemporary tale. Ages 12-up.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read that is captivating and intense!, September 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Breaking Rank (Hardcover)
When I started this book I was told that I would "fall in love with Baby." And not only did I fall in love with Baby, but with the entire book as well! This is one of the best books I have read lately. The story of Baby's struggle to become himself and his relationship with Casey is so captivating and honest that I could not put this book down! The intensity of the book often took my breath away and the superb writing realistically portrays the fierce and earnest emotions of teenagers. Read this book and you will not be disappointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Breaking Rank - A Wonderful Book!, July 30, 2000
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Breaking Rank (Hardcover)
I thought Breaking Rank was an excellent book! It tells about a teenage boy, Baby (Thomas) who belongs to a "gang", though that's not the write word. It's more of a clan, and the boys in it have their own rules, about not participating in school, dressing in black, and not speaking in public. However, one day Baby takes a step and fills out a test - and is moved from special ed to the gifted program! A bright, pretty girl named Casey tutors him, but it's still a hard journey for Baby, breaking away from his clan. That's not made easier for him when the clan finds out, nor when the boys in his class get upset - especially when he and Casey begin to spend a lot of time together. It's very tense and exciting. I gave this book five stars because it was so well written! I would recommend this book to anyone aged 12 and up.

4.0 out of 5 stars Breaking Rank, February 13, 2002

I think all kids should read it because it tells you about gangs and how dangerous it is, and you would have to choose between your gange and your friends,or even anyone. People would rate you on how you dress, if they just rate you on how you drss than how are they supossed to know how you really are and just because you wear a certin color all the time does not mean that you are in a gang or anything like that.It is like judging a book by it cover. And it is not good to judge a book by its cover.
