A must read that is captivating and intense!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Breaking Rank (Hardcover)
When I started this book I was told that I would "fall in love with Baby." And not only did I fall in love with Baby, but with the entire book as well! This is one of the best books I have read lately. The story of Baby's struggle to become himself and his relationship with Casey is so captivating and honest that I could not put this book down! The intensity of the book often took my breath away and the superb writing realistically portrays the fierce and earnest emotions of teenagers. Read this book and you will not be disappointed!

Breaking Rank - A Wonderful Book!,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Breaking Rank (Hardcover)
I thought Breaking Rank was an excellent book! It tells about a teenage boy, Baby (Thomas) who belongs to a "gang", though that's not the write word. It's more of a clan, and the boys in it have their own rules, about not participating in school, dressing in black, and not speaking in public. However, one day Baby takes a step and fills out a test - and is moved from special ed to the gifted program! A bright, pretty girl named Casey tutors him, but it's still a hard journey for Baby, breaking away from his clan. That's not made easier for him when the clan finds out, nor when the boys in his class get upset - especially when he and Casey begin to spend a lot of time together. It's very tense and exciting. I gave this book five stars because it was so well written! I would recommend this book to anyone aged 12 and up.

Breaking Rank,

This review is from: Breaking Rank (Paperback)
I think all kids should read it because it tells you about gangs and how dangerous it is, and you would have to choose between your gange and your friends,or even anyone. People would rate you on how you dress, if they just rate you on how you drss than how are they supossed to know how you really are and just because you wear a certin color all the time does not mean that you are in a gang or anything like that.It is like judging a book by it cover. And it is not good to judge a book by its cover.

Breaking Rank,
This review is from: Breaking Rank (Paperback)
I recently read the novel Breaking Rank by Kristin D. Randle. The book consisted of many good aspects with the way characters related to each other and plot. I enjoyed the plot of the story the most.I thought the idea of having a smart, proper girl like Casey getting mixed up with a tougher yet intelligent boy like Thomas was a strong point of the novel. The two were incredibly different but had many things in common that neither one of them knew about. One large difference was that Casey was raised in a stable, goal-oriented family while Thomas was a member of the Clan whom most people looked down upon and even feared. The novel gave an eye-opening view of what could happen when two opposite sides are thrown together and have to learn to work together for a common cause. It also shows how people can let small, trivial differences affect their lives and what they might miss out on if that happens. An example of this would be when Thomas gets beat up by the "preppier" bunch of kids for being with Casey just because they didn't feel it was right. In conclusion, I was left with and overall good impression of the novel. I felt the tone and speed of the novel was set so you would be able to keep interest without being bored or losing yourself in what was going on. Overall I would recommend this novel to others.

I thought that this book was good. Even though it uses the same type of plot that many other books that were written before it used, I thought it was an interesting book. It kept me interested in reading it. The author took an topic that has been written about many times before and expanded on it, making it a book that the reader will like and not want to put down. Overall, I think it was a good book and I would recommend reading this book.

I feel that i could sit and read this book thousands of times! I loved reading it and just couldnt put it down! The characters in this book reminds me of the people and groups in my school. Sometimes kids can be so sterotypical and judge people without even getting to know them, just because of the way that they look. I normally hate reading books but i didnt mind reading this one because i was acually able to relate this to my life in various ways concidering i am i high school student. Im sure that if you choose to read this book you will love it as much as i did!

A Powerful Story,
By A Customer
This review is from: Breaking Rank (Hardcover)
I feel that this is a powerful novel about the reality of human realtionships. The characters were drawn with truth, and were very sympathetic. The dialogue was realistic enough that I forgot I was reading a book and was surprised to look up and find myself at home. They sounded like the people I know, who are not stupid, but who are very deserving of respect. The Clan was deeply frightening, not because of physical violence, but because of psychological violence. I can't think of anything that frightens me more or makes me more sick inside than when the people you love and trust not only put their own interests before you, but do not protect you. Instead of loving you, they use you to strengthen their own worlds, not even caring about what it may do to you. The cold love of the Clan was deeply disturbing to me. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in realtionships between people, in self-truth, and in standing up for the right thing. It is about people who just want to be normal and happy, something that is a rare accomplishment in this world, where people care more about themselves than they do about caring for the other person.

Loved it!,

I love this author. Randle has the amazing ability to create original stories. Somehow I got so caught up in the book I didn't realize I had finished it in less than two hours. I was just so anxious to find out what was going to happen next. She has a way of shedding light on the more important issues in society without it seeming like some huge political statement. She is truly talented and all her books are fantastic. I hope she comes out with more.
