5.0 out of 5 stars If You've Been There.., May 28, 2000

This review is from: Breaking the Silence: A Personal Story of Incest and Recovery (Paperback)
I know, and work with Melody Platt. When I heard that she had authored a book, I couldn't wait to read it. I am a book lover, and was impressed with the notion that I knew someone who was published. I too am a survior of incest, and while it's effects on me as an adult seemed long gone, I quickly realized, in reading Mel's book, that those feelings of shame, of guilt, and of fear, were right there, as if no time had passed. I found myself grieving for Melody's lost childhood as well as my own. I found myself loathing her father as if he were my own step-father, and I rejoiced in her strength, in sharing her story, and living a life well beyond it's foundation. For anyone who's "Been There", I recommend her book, if for no other reason, than to validate where you were and how far you have come, as a survior, and to know that none of us is really alone. I celebrate Melody's strength..

5.0 out of 5 stars Melody is more than a survivor, she is a leader..., May 2, 2001

I have read other "survivor" books and can't seem to put them down. This was no different. But this book was different in that the author provides a personal journal and exacting documents (police reports, letters, etc.) that allow us to see word for word the process of courage in action. This is a comprehensive start to finish, weak to strong, survival guide for someone who has suffered incest. She reminds me of a championship boxer. Her story is told from the ring, with blood, sweat and pain carefully described, and then we see her at the beach finding solitude, strength, and lasting power because of her deep relationship with God and the natural beauty of his creation.

5.0 out of 5 stars A "MUST READ" for Survivors and their partners..., April 12, 2000

This review is from: Breaking the Silence: A Personal Story of Incest and Recovery (Paperback)
I recently had the privilege of meeting Melody, and she is truly an inspiration for all Survivors. She continues to work on herself, and validates the roller coaster of emotions that comes from sexual abuse.

Even after years of therapy for sexual abuse (and having read at least 30 books written by professionals), I still felt alone and very ashamed of all the feelings that continue to interrupt my life and relationships.

Then I read Melody's book, and I have a new, clear understanding of my own journey. This is a great book written by a Survivor, for Survivors!

Through this amazing story of Melody's life from infant victim to mature woman Survivor, I have gained a new sense of strength! This honest account of the horror of sexual abuse and its ongoing effects truly helped me realize I was not alone.

This book is part of Melody's own journey of self-healing, and is also an incredible tool for other Survivors (and their partners).

SURVIVORS: READ IT and THRIVE!

This book was a very big help to me to understand that I am not alone in the events of the past.We need more people like Melody to be honest enough to take the challenge and write their stories. The more we speak out the less unbelievable the stories become.Congratulations Melody Platt.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Remarkable Journey of Truth and Grace, Being and Doing..., October 18, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Breaking the Silence: A Personal Story of Incest and Recovery (Paperback)
My partner and I both found ourselves instantly "hooked" starting with the preface: "On October 26, 1975, I divorced my father." We both found this a hard book to put down! Melody Platt has written a moving story that brings you from her birth in 1960 to 1991 and her recovery from incest. It is a personal story that is well-documented, and it is also a story that any incest survivor can appreciate. We also found it interesting for the glimpses of dealing with this process in the South. We hope we get to read more from this author about her continuing journey and self-discovery process!

4.0 out of 5 stars Honesty and Sincerity, June 15, 2011
This review is from: Breaking the Silence: A Personal Story of Incest and Recovery (Paperback)
I recently read Breaking the Silence by Melody Platt and am writing to say that it is one of the most searingly honest accounts of incest I have read. I met Melody and am impressed by her balance and clarity. Her bravery is at the front also.
