Book Description

A fast-paced, full-length contemporary romance from award winning author, Barbara Samuel.

Mattie O’Neal is on the run. She's chopped off her hair, stolen a car, changed her name, and is hiding in a tiny Arizona town, slinging hash. She thought she was safe – until Zeke Shephard walked through the door.

Rugged, hard-edged Zeke doesn't get involved--but there's something about Mattie's courage that catches his sympathy. When the thugs who want to silence Mattie forever show up, Zeke steps in and takes her to his own private hide away, where the two must decide if the link between them is worth fighting for...and if they can stay alive long enough to explore it.

From AAR reviews:
"I read this book at one sitting and then immediately began to read it again. I have seldom felt such love and empathy for two characters as I did for Zeke and Mattie. When Mattie left Zeke for a short time, [Ruth Wind] conveyed the loneliness of this man who had thought he was a loner so well, that I thought my heart would break. When they were reunited, I wept with joy. Breaking the Rules is a book filled with deep emotion, yet it is never maudlin or sappy. It only reinforces my opinion that [Ruth Wind] is one of the best writers of romance today. The day I find all of her older books with be a very happy one."

5.0 out of 5 stars From -94 to now February 2, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I bought this book when it was first released in 1994. At the time, the name on it was Ruth Wind. It was a category romance, one of those on-the-shelf-in-the-grocery-store-for-a-month books, and since I was between jobs, I must have read fifty or sixty of them over the course of a few months that year. When I went back to work, the reading stopped, and a year or two later I got rid of most of the books. They were taking up space and it wasn't like I was going to read them again. Most of them were just not that good. But I kept three or four, the special ones, the ones I couldn't bear to part with, and this was one of those. It still is. It's there, on my shelf, eighteen years later, and has been through eight or nine house moves to date. I take it out occasionally and read it, and it's just as good as it was the first time. Great story, compelling characters, and fantastic storytelling. I would totally buy it again. In fact, I think I might, just in case the house burns down and I lose my paperback. You can't ever be too careful, can you?

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful characters, wonderful romance May 4, 2004
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This is one of my favorite reads; the main characters are vulnerable individuals who touch your heart with their personal struggles. You will wish for a man like Zeke in your life if you favor the strong, silent, luscious-type who protect those they love. And Mattie's growth from naive trusting girl to complex loving woman makes her a heroine to savor and remember. Definitely a book to read and re-read.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT STORY, LOVABLE CHARACTERS March 26, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
BREAKING THE RULES is a great story. I read it many years ago and have since read it a few times more. The author created very lovable characters in Mattie and Zeke. The storyline is excellent, packed with action, suspense, and romance. It's a memorable story that you will enjoy reading more than once. Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Romance at it's best April 28, 2012
By Kari
Format:Kindle Edition
The book description tells us to expect thrill, adventure and romance. I think the obvious word would be erotic romance since the end is not that hard to predict. The two central characters are well etched enough for the reader to imagine exactly how they look, but their strength of character given their history or their feelings are lost thanks to the constant sexual foreplay. The characters are almost cliched; a difficult man and a damsel in distress. There is enough thrills concerning their attraction for each other and the author has extended this chemistry as long as possible. The aspect of the women getting stronger as the circumstances change seems completely uninspired because she conveniently has things like the hero, his cabin etc by her side. It is a cozy dreamy and sometimes stimulating read but don't expect anything else.

...and then I didn't want the book to end. The synopsis has been told, and very well, by other reviewers. So, just my feelings about Breaking the Rules: This book held on to my heart, rooting for good to triumph over evil, for good people to get the reward they deserved. It was one soul reaching for another, but afraid to grab the gold ring, afraid they would not be able to live up to their potential. With Mattie running in fear for her life and Zeke withholding his feelings from the world, it seemed that each had nothing to offer the other. This book kept me engrossed and entertained, was well developed and fast moving. Yes, I'd read it or buy it again.

5.0 out of 5 stars I absolutely loved this book November 20, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
The last few reviews I have done have not been positive. I was beginning to think that maybe I was being too critical. Then I thought maybe I should quit reading romance novels. This book changed my mind. I absolutely loved this book. I am not sure why but it really resonated with me. I loved the characters and I loved the ending. I loved everything about it. Thank you Barbara Samuel.

3.0 out of 5 stars Light read May 11, 2013
By Mary
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was a light read. Having been written a while ago, it seemed a bit dated in places, but not terribly so. I think I most enjoyed watching Mattie's transformation from a "mouse" to a strong woman who isn't afraid to go after what she wants.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good lighthearted reading June 23, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Zeke is the kind of man most women wish for. A quiet strong protective type. This book is one of my "keepers" The end became somewhat predictable but it is advertised as a romantic read not a tragedy so you know going in that it will have a happy ending and it does. They are on the run, make their stand and fall in love in the process
